"Moderation in All Things"

Terence - Roman comic dramatist (185 BC - 159 BC)

balancing-your-social-media-activities

For those of you who are new to ActiveRain, Social Media, and blogging, one of the most difficult lessons to learn is the importance and discipline of balancing your online marketing efforts with your past, more traditional methods of promotion/business development.

In our industry, there is a natural tendency for people to become so caught up in the latest and greatest marketing craze, to the extent that they often neglect to continue doing those things which have worked effectively in the past.

Let's face it, accessing and utilizing Social Media tools, especially social networks like ActiveRain, can be fun and extremely addictive! And, the more addicting they become, the more time-consuming they become as well. Eventually, we end up expending a lot of time and effort that doesn't necessarily translate into increased business/revenue.

And isn't that really the reason you began your Social Media Adventure? Because someone told you that ActiveRain and blogging was the latest and greatest method for generating business and attracting potential clients?

Well, allow me to share just a few basic suggestions to help put your Social Media involvements into perspective:

Don't Throw the Baby Out with the Bath Water

Remember that Social Media (blogging, social networks) is simply one more tool in your marketing tool belt. Don't neglect those methods and practices you have used in the past to generate business and promote your services. While is could be argued that utilizing Social Media can be a more efficient and effective use of your time and energy, it should not replace those methods you've employed in the past. It should supplement and compliment them.

Be Deliberate and Disciplined

What are your goals for using Social Media? Develop a detailed and intentional Social Media marketing plan. What tools, platforms, applications will you use that will enable you to achieve your goals? Remember that the effective use of the right Social Media tools should SAVE you time, not rob you of your time. Schedule your Social Media involvements as part of your daily ritual and routine. Discipline yourself to stay within the allotted time-frames you establish.blog-tips-for-rain-drips

Consistency is the Key

Whatever plan or schedule you determine, stick with it. Any meaningful kind of successful marketing effort takes time and consistency to be effective. This is especially true when it comes to blogging. In order to develop any traction with the search engines, and be 'found' by potential clients, you will need to regularly publish good, relevant content to your blog.

Pace Yourself

If you're new to ActiveRain, Social Media, or blogging, things can be a slight bit daunting and overwhelming. Take baby steps at first. Don't bite off more than you can chew. Trying to do too much at once will only leave you feeling frustrated and defeated. Do one thing at a time until you gain a sense of confidence and comfort. Then move on to the next thing.

I hope you've found these suggestions insightful. For more helpful information, check out the Blog Tips for Rain Drips Archive.

Rich great points.  I am doing my best to keep up with some of the new social media tools, but I know what works and I'm not sure about some others.  And, the big thing is time management.  But, I'm trying.

Rich - You said it well. As much as I utilize social media sites, in the end, we have to get down to basics. It's a People business. We still have to get in front of the People.

Excellent advice. Salesmen have to be careful not to become social hermets. "Social Media" is no excuse for avoiding human contact.

Great advice Rich. We all learn at different paces....oh there is so much to learn.

No one can do it all at once...and you really need the motivation to learn all the techy things to learn.

Just do one thing at a time...I have tons of stuff saved in Bookmarks that I will get to one day.

Rich, I try to live by "everything in moderation" especially with diet and exercise but I don't always succeed! AR and others can be very addicting at first.  I remember a lot of nights staying up past midnight to work on a post or make one more comment but I quickly learned that as the business came in I would have to focus my energies on that. So this summer there were weeks I only posted twice and the world did not come to an end.LOL As business increases, which is of course the goal, I am finding a nice ebb and flow to the social media and I hope that will continue to work for me.

Great points Rich,

Social media can be very addictive. Nothing though can replace face to face.

By the way if anyone ever had doubts about Americans being crazy or not they should take a look at the Picture.

Moderation is great...but it's a lot more fun to be impulsive!  Seriously, it makes sense to approach one's practice using many types of marketing and publicity.  You never know what's going to work until you keep trying it...and it works!

I love the advice. I wish I would have known this about 18 months ago! I think the biggest take away for me is Pacing Yourself.  You don't have to become an expert on Twitter, Facebook, ActiveRain, etc all by lunch time.

Rich, I agree that social media and blogging should be one leg to a strong marketing table.  We still must utilize the traditional practices that have withstood the changing business world.  It is very easy to lose track of time when engaging in social media.  I'm working on setting boundaries for myself about when I blog and how much time I spend on it each day.  Thanks for the reinforcement!

Moderation in all things was also written by King Solomon in the book of Ecclesiastes.

We need to be consistent, social, business oriented, and locally real estate focused.

Your post is a good reminder of these things.... keep it up, Rich...

Good advice!... Blogging and Social Media are in addition too, not necessarily replacing all more traditional methods. What works works... that is what is important. In fact, postcards are powerful right now because hardly anyone is doing them! Most important, and I remind my clients all the time... you are spot on... start small, discipline yourself to a schedule that's do-able. Thanks.

Rich,

this is great advice. Blogging can be daunting at first.  And it's true that we should continue to do other things that have worked for us. With any business, relying on only one source of marketing is very risky.

To Everyone:  Great responses and comments. Thank You!

I especially liked with Loreena and William had to say. Nothing will ever replace the importance of 'Face-to-Face' contact with our clients and potential clients. Don't allow your On-line marketing time to overshadow your personal 'in-person' touches. Disintermediation will never succeed as long as we emphasize the more intimate, interpersonal elements of our business.

I agree that we should do everything in moderation, but isn't it great when there's a big chunk of stuff that you want to know about right now? There's nothing like a challenge to really put a spring in your step!  I think that's why some of just go right off the deep end while others like to wade for a while (ooh wait, I think I just stole that idea from the Rainmaker upgrade ad).

Rich,

You are so right!  In addition to social media (which I am still not totally in love with, to tell the truth), I still do a couple of things that I personally respond favorably to: postcards and hand-written notes.  The postcard campaign to my SOI is a fun campaign that runs completely on auto pilot.  The hand-written notes will always be in my tool box, since I know how much they mean to me when I receive one.  Those will never go out of style.

Rich,

Don't worry about Kyle Texas --- I don't think it is even an actual person writing those comments.  I haven't figured out the exact code yet, but all of his comments appear to be automatically generated by a late 1990's "Magic 8-Ball" random comment generator program... so be careful that you are not just responding to a computer program!

I actually find them entertaining in a nonsensical kind of way.   :-)

Rich, I was totally addicted to Active Rain last year when we met you and Brad at NAR. It has taken me a year to bring some sort of balance back into my life. I think the learning curve of all this was overwhelming, but after time you do get a better handle on it.  This is a very deserving Feature because Social Media is great but works best in boundaries.

P.S. Rich, I just noticed you live and sell in Kitsap County.  Although it's been many years, having lived in Palm Desert, CA and Honolulu, Hawaii in the last 15 years, I used to live on Bainbridge Island, and many years ago built a passive solar home in Indianola and lived there for many  years.  What a gorgeous place.  I hope real estate is doing well there.

Hey, Douglas!  Real estate here on the Kitsap Peninsula is probably better than most, given the constant influx of active-duty military and their dependents. I used to live in the Makiki District, near the corner of Kinau & Pensacola. Is the 1st Baptist Church of Honolulu still there on the corner?

Great advice, its hard for me not to get sucked into one thing like blogging, or videos: its important to keep a good mix and keep a consistent common thread through out everything. I am relativity new to social media, but I have decided that internet marketing is going to be 80% of my marketing, not just blogs but websites, videos, ebooks, etc. Another 10% is going to be generating traffic to my internet marketing, and the last ten will be following up with prior client to generate their future referrals.  I have never marketed my self an other way and find the internet is the cheapest, and most effective way to reach clients today. Not just gaining new clients but selling and finding great properties as well.
