SCAM on me! Almost a Victim!

Finally getting through my mail this weekend I came across a letter from the State about my annual Corporation status.  I glanced at it and tossed it into the pile to take to my CPA.  Thought nothing of it.

I later thought about it and decided to take a good look at it to see if it was something that I could do so that I don't keep lining my CPA's pockets unnecessarily.  Looked simple enough, just needed to verify the address, officers of the corporation etc. I just need to fill it out and mail my check for $125.  Ok, simple enough.

Add it to my TO DO LIST for the time I usually have set aside for those type of tasks.  Sitting at my desk a little later a thought popped into my head about this form I needed to submit.  First of all I have been incorporated for several years and yearly I pay my dues to the Secretary of State of $30 but I have never had this $125 charge before.  Thinking maybe this was a random thing they do to make sure you have all your documents and that you are in compliance I DID WHAT I SHOULD HAVE DONE TO IN THE BEGINNING.   I read it.

Official looking but buried way down later in the page and certainly not in large print was the statement that this product or service has not been approved or endorsed by any Government Agency.  It is a solicitation for the order of services.

They've covered themselves. They are legitimately offering a service.  But it just made me wonder how much money these people make when someone as absent minded as myself write them a check.  Thank goodness I am so anal about checking things again and again.  That could have been a GOTCHA!

Hi Sybil,
I am famous for my "scanning" so I can certainly relate to your story.  At least you finally got around to reading it and did not get caught by these "slims".

Hmmm. I just got an insurance bill in the mail.  We pay our bills right away here because insurance is difficult to find.  Turns out it isn't a legit bill.  THey're just banking that someone will write a check and mail it off.  I scanned and emailed it to my insurance agent to verify the coverage.  I would have been out $700.

Sybil - I got the same letter and took it seriously at first.  I got in on a Friday, so I wasn't able to call my accountant until Monday.  Over the weekend that it came, I looked at it more carefully and saw that it was not mandatory.  This is a very shady practice even if they are offering a service because they make it look like it came from the government.

Sybil:  Seems like everywhere we turn now, there's some dishonest person trying their best to find an opportunity to cheat someone, whether it's the internet, or snail mail or by telephone.  I received something that looked like an official bill for $65.00 due and like you, I finally took a  closer look and it was actually a solicitation, not a bill.  Had I not been paying attention, I might have very well paid the $65 because it was presented just like a regular invoice would be.  Now it's Christmas time and the scammers are even more geared up than usual.
