November is here and traditionally it's the time to begin preparing for the holidays.  For most of us, it's like taking on an additional part time job - shopping, cooking, decorating, wrapping gifts, entertaining.

Since joining Activerain, I've already taken on a second full time job... writing market reports and hyperlocal posts, revamping my website and attending online courses in Internet marketing and technology, otherwise known as reading blogs.  The homework level is crippling.

As I sat down at the computer this morning, I found a note to myself scribbled on a scrap of paper:

"Edit your life as though you're a writer or a filmmaker.  Cut out the chaos and the clutter.  Keep only the very best."

So with this extra hour on the first day of November, I'm taking stock of how I want to spend the other 24 hours today and every other day.  This isn't going to be a blog about cleaning out your closets.  It's about getting back to the basics.  Which of your daily activities brings you joy or enriches your life and the lives of those around you?

Starting the morning by sharing a cup of cowboy coffee with my husband as we sit on the deck and greet the sunrise is one activity I'll never give up.  I'd much rather miss an extra hour of sleep and have that special time together to start my day.

Baking an apple pie is an acivity that takes a great deal of time.  But for me it's a way of bonding with my daughter.  The time we spend talking and laughing together is priceless.  So I'll be keeping that chore.  I'd rather have those memories years from now than to recall dashing to the store for a frozen dessert because I spent that extra hour on the Internet.

But I've made the decision to delete negative people from my life.  That's one of the toughest things to do, especially if it's someone who has been in your life for a long time, but it can have the biggest payoff.  Listening to complaints, backbiting and gossip every time you take a coffee break at the office or run into your neighbor at the store drains the soul.

Another group I'm getting rid of are the drama queens.  And I'm not just taking about women here.  Sorry, guys, but some of you are the biggest drama queens around.  I don't care how big your deal is - real estate is not a life or death matter.  And I don't need to spend MY time listening to your endless tales of triumph and tribulation.

So as dawn breaks over the mountains in Murphy, I've decided that today, I'm going to look at eveything I do with two questions in mind -

  •  Does this bring me joy?
  •  Does it enrich my life or the lives of those around me?

The hour of sleep has been a great plus. The only minus has been I am missing the great sunrises. You have posted one and I posted some a while ago too

Kate, Wonderful self-assessment.  I'd asked myself the same things years ago and did "delete" those people that saw nothing positive in ANYTHING.  Drama queens are also a good one....at first you believe they are having so many problems and finally realize they love to complain!  I enjoyed your post very much.

You are so right.  It is important to focus on the most important people in life and don't let others waste your precious time.

I am glad I read this just now. The timing is great. Lately I have been letting people suck the life out of me in this business....changes are coming.

I hear ya Kate!  A long time ago, I made my home a drama free zone.  And, in all honesty, I try to keep the perimeter around ME a drama free zone wherever I am.  Life is stressful enough without adding self-induced trama.  *eye roll*

I love your idea about making the apple pies.  I've been trying to find something I think my 5 year old son and I could do together - and he loves to be in the kitchen with me.  I may steal your idea.  :o)

Kate.  What a great blog.  We all need to do a little self-assessment often.  Keep the main thing the main thing and make sure our priorities are in order.  Good job.

Kate - personally I surround myself with people who I want to be around with. Folks who always talk about the tales of triumph is good for some and bad for others; ultimately you decide what you want from your life and you alone can make the change. I have a home office and I'm my own broker, so there is no trash talking around the water cooler. The only trash talking here is when my dog barks at me when she wants to go out :).

Hi Kate~ What time of morning do you have to get up to see the sunrise with your husband?  And what is cowboy coffee?  ( I am guessing it is really strong coffee?)  You are right, it is so important to focus on the people in your life that are the most important.  Time is something you can never get back!

Kate, what a great heads up- thank you. It's certainly more productive to make connections that matter than to spend an abundance of time on situations that sap energy and make us wonder, in hindsight, if it was worth it! An apple pie with a daughter will never result in anything except how valued the time was for both of you- doesn't get better than that. Except maybe the pie...I'm hungry now.

I enjoyed your post today.....somewhere I read that kids spell LOVE.....TIME!!  Life is short, so it's all about time....watching a sun rise, contemplating a leaf on a tree, playing with  your kids/grandkids, reading a book, walking hand and hand with a loved one...Doesn't get better than that!!  The best things in life are FREE!

Thank you for the great reminder! Earlier this year I determined that I too had people in my life that were too negative. Sadly, some of these people have been dear friends over the years. But in making the choice to spend less time with these people, I have opened my life up to much more joy and happiness and it is certainly rewarding! There is so much more to life than drama, drama, DRAMA!

Kate:  My eyes welled as I read this. Thank you. I'm frequently telling my son to do things that bring him joy. From that place ... all things are possible.  Making a contribution brings me joy ...so I am dedicated to serving others, creating smiles, and making sure people feel good when they are around me.  That's what life is all about!

Thanks for the wonderfully inspiring post, Kate...it's definitely time for me to change my life! I just had a recent incident best explained as "the trash took themselves out" and it's nice that sometimes the people who are negative simply remove themselves from your life when you don't give them the response they're looking for! :)

Kate,

Arizona doesn't participate in Daylight Savings Time.  Does this mean we're stuck with the life we have?  LOL

Most definitely! I loved the run-down you gave of things that you do to just take time for yourself and to spend with your loved ones. That is more important than any commission check, anyday. I've started deleting a few people from my life already, and trust me, I have never felt better. I may need to delete a few more, but it will be well worth it. Thanks!

I have to admit I just took the extra hour to chill out. with all we do it is difficult to find down time, so 1 hour, I took it! Will it change my life? No ,I need to give more thought to that but a great post to make us all think about what we take for granted, what annoys us and how to take positive actions for our well bing.

No Negatitivity, No Drama Queens. Now where will I go?

"I have always been pushed by the negative. The apparent failure of a play sends me back to my typewriter that very night, before the reviews are out. I am more compelled to get back to work than if I had a success.", Tennessee Williams, American Dramatist

Great post! Taking time for family is so important.

It may not be popular to say- but I don't exchange Christmas presents with anyone besides immediate family. I make sure everyone knows. I tend to surprise friends with random gifts during the year. It has really cut down on my holiday stress.
