Not Your Usual Moose Crossing in Red Lodge!!!

The following is the continuation of Moose Monday - My Moose-ly Positive Experience in Red Lodge, Montana and the last part of this 4-part series.  To start from the beginning of this moose chase, click on the following link: Moose Monday - Big Bull Moose in Big Sky Country!

It has been about 30 minutes since I first spotted the Bull moose near Grizzly Peak Mountain Homes subdivision in Red Lodge and decided to go on a moose chase (my first).  My heart is beating fast with excitement.  As I am parked at the Ranger Station parking lot South of Red Lodge, I watch the moose start coming down the hill (towards Highway 212) and disappear behind a few trees.  I decide to start the car and go South on Highway 212 to see if I can snap a few more good photos of this big bull moose.

Moose CrossingLess than a few seconds later, I think I see the moose running behind trees  (on the West side of Highway 212).   The moose jumps over a fence between two properties.  To my surprise, I see very fast movement through the trees near the fence.  Did the bull moose pick up speed?   There is fast and very fast!  What moved was too fast to be a moose but perhaps something caused the moose to run even faster than what I had seen so far.  I slow down the car, pull the car on the edge of the highway (in the emergency lane) and put on the breaks (the only car I see then is one car that was also pulled on the side of the road which I imagined had also stopped to admire the events that were taking place).  The suspense what killing me but I did not have to wait too long to get the explanation.  Out of nowhere, two white-tail deers jumped on the highway and crossed the street and start going South on the East side of Highway 212.  I assume they saw the big bull moose coming towards them and decided they were better off staying as far away from his big antlers as possible.  I don't get to catch my breath from this unexpected deer appearance that I get to see this big tall moose come out of behind the trees and also cross the street.  This would be my final chance to capture a photo of him.  The following is the last photo I took of my moose chase.

Bull moose and Deer Crossing One After the Others in Red Lodge, Montana

Notice the back of the two white-tail deer running on the side of the road (in between the moose's feet).  What are the odds of capturing a bull moose and two deer in the wild in the same photo?

Here is a zoom of the above photo so that you can see the white-tails!  :)

Close-Up of the Moose and Deer Crossing One after the Others in Red Lodge

This completes my moose chase adventure.  Till next time!   Come back next week for a new moose photo.

Have a great Monday and start to the week!

Way too much fun Gerry! I CAN'T believe (except I see it with my own eyes) that you got the mosse AND the deer, and between his legs at that! Way to go!

Hi Gerry, It seems you saved the best shot for last, to end the moose chase series and it is spectacular.  I just love it, it is so great, especially with the deer in the background!

Hi Gerry ~ That is a glorious photo! Even the snow looks beautiful - and believe me, saying anything positive about snow doesn't come easily to me. And your new profile photo is very sharp!

Gerry - You have a great way of getting the moose and the two deer to pose for you in such a creative way.

Debi,

Thank you.  I did not believe myself and did not know for sure that I had captured all 3 animals in one photo.  It all happened so fast!   Never would have I expected that the moose legs and body will serve as a frame for the photo of the white-tail deer!  :)

Mary,

Always nice to save the best for last!  This photo was a nice and unexpected present from the moose just before he disappeared in the woods and in a subdivision appropriately named moose meadows.   Thank you for following this moose chase and for all the nice comments.

Liz,

Thank you and thank you!  :)  There is hardly any snow in the area as of today (November 3).   If it was not for the early snow in October, I may not have easily spotted this moose and get as many photos of him on my moose chase.  His dark coat against the bright white background helped me spot him from a safe distance (many times throughout this fun chase) and his foot prints on the snow guided me in the right direction when he manged to get out of sight a couple times.

Marc,

Neither the moose nor the deer were interesting in posing at the time of this photo.   I was just lucky that I was quick enough to capture all 3 of these wild animals in motion in one photo.   Thank you for following this mose chase series.

Hi Gery, I loved this and really this was a terrific photo story. Thankfully you got the photo. Life is full of these adventures and capturing it here for others is so much appreciated. I am so happy we have this great group who capture some of these wonderful daily happenings in life. This bull moose is now famous. I wonder if he cares? :-) Great photo story!!

Gerry - that photo was just one of those magical moments that a camera can capture and keep forever.  You just happened to be in the right place at the right time.  I promise one of these days I will have a photo to add to your moose group.  Until then.....this is the closest thing to a moose that I photographed this week.

William,

Thank you for all the great feedback. To be able to share these kinds of adventures makes them even more exciting.   I was thankful too to get this last photo.   This bull moose is famous but I wonder what he thinks of the paparazzi and the chase on that day.  :)

I look forward to your contribution to the moose group.  We need to see a photo of the Canadian moose!  Thank you for sharing the closest thing you found and photographed in the mean time.  From the look in his eyes, you sure caught him off guard!  :)

Hi Gerry, I guess you had to pretty fast on your feet to capture this one. Did you take this shot from your vehicle or did you have to get out? Great shot & your narrative accompanying this post was fabulous, I felt like I was right there with you.

Okay Gerry on the prowl for an Ontarian Canadian moose!  But tell me, just how BIG was that Red Lodge fellow?

Cynthia,

I believe I took this photo from right outside the car (next to the driver's door).  So, yes, I was pretty fast on my feet.  :)   I was going to take a photo of the two white-tail deer and next thing I know, I see the moose crossing the street.  I took the photo and then jumped back in the car.  I am glad you liked the photo as well as the accompanying narrative.

I believe he was about 7 feet tall and about 9 feet from the nose to the derriere.   He was a BIG fellow!

Gerry,    I LOVED reading your moose story.  I had a momma and her two baby deer walk past my place today, but that is not near as exciting as your tale and my pictures are not as beautiful either.  Thanks for sharing.   ...geri

Geri,

Thanks.  You should still share your moose photos!   We want as many moose sightings and from different parts of the country here on the Moose Monday group.   The important is to report and participate via a photo.

That's cool. My question, though, is what's with the truck bed full of snow?

And look what I found for you:

Russel,

Thank you for your moose contribution!   I like it especially since I spent a few years in Toronto.   The truck full of snow is there to show how much snow we had in the 24 hours prior to the photo (they should have removed some of the snow so that they don't have the view obstructed of the back window).  The snow really made the moose stick out!

Brett,

It may seem that way but I have not seen moose since my now famous moose chase.  You should check the Moose Monday group for photos of the Alaska moose curtesy of Debra Leisek.   I am the Realtor with a passion for photography (never been this much into photography till after I moved to MT).   Thank you for visiting this post.
