HSUS Investigation Uncovers Veal Calf Abuse, Closes Plant

It’s always deeply disturbing to see the mistreatment of animals, but there’s something even worse when the victims are babies and seem so utterly vulnerable and frightened. Today, The HSUS released results of our latest investigation of modern agribusiness—in which one of our people went undercover for seven weeks at Bushway Packing, Inc. of Grand Isle, Vt. The plant specializes in slaughtering some of the rejects of the dairy industry—namely, the male calves who obviously cannot be used for milk production, nor as breeding stock.

The calves are taken away from their mothers at birth and sent, as mere infants, to the slaughter plant for immediate slaughter—to be used as “bob veal.” Without their mothers to nourish them, they are in a weakened state—hungry, lonely, confused, frightened, and, in some cases, unable to stand or walk.

HSUS undercover investigation documents shocking abuse of veal calves
The HSUS
Our undercover investigation shows shocking abuse of veal calves.

Our investigator documented the kicking, slapping, and electric prodding of downer calves in the pre-slaughter area—violations of the Humane Methods of Slaughter Act. Our person on the inside then recorded inhumane stunning of the animals, and the hacking up and skinning of still-conscious calves.

Today, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Vermont Agency of Agriculture shut down the plant after seeing The HSUS’s footage and announced the initiation of a thorough investigation.

"The deplorable scenes recorded in the video released by the Humane Society of the United States are unequivocally unacceptable,” said U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack in a statement today. “The callous behavior and attitudes displayed in the video clearly appear to be violations of USDA's humane handling regulations.”

Roger Allbee, the head of Vermont’s agriculture department, offered a similar denunciation.

After reviewing the undercover footage obtained by the HSUS investigator in August and September 2009, animal scientists Dr. Temple Grandin and Kurt Vogel pronounced that, “the handling practices and attention to insensibility at this plant are unacceptable and must improve.”

Early last year, The HSUS exposed the routine abuse of downed cows at a California slaughter plant, which was the number two supplier to the National School Lunch Program. That investigation prompted the largest meat recall in U.S. history and led to a new federal regulation that banned the slaughter of downer cattle, but left open a loophole for downer calves. Subsequent investigations in four states revealed other abuses of downers.

Today, we blow the lid off the abuse of these infant calves—some of them, downers, too. We’ll have more to say on this case on Monday, but here’s our full release today and our video.

www.ToulaRosebrock.comHi Kristin:

This is disgusting and must be stopped.

I will NEVER eat veal....

In fact, I think I've only had it once in my entire life.

TOula, I agree!   I only had veal once also, when as a kid, I heard my mom tell my grandma that she made us kids veal, but called it steak.  I was horrified....we all said we didn't like the "steak"...never again....UI don't eat steak.  Now, if I could just give up my burgers and chicken.

There are some equally horrible videos of cows and chickens if you want to eliminate meat altogether.  Many of my vegetarian friends aren't against meat per se but rather against the treatment of animals.  Community-supported agriculture has gotten a big boost because of commercial abuses.

That's just so wrong. Glad to hear they were closed down. Good job letting everyone know about this injustice and that proper action was taken. Let it be a lesson to other companies who choose to engage in that type of practice.

Peggy, yes I know.  I have posted about them as well.....I like hearing that your veggie friends are against the treatment of animals, and it is not so much about the actual meat.  I feel like a hipicrat bc I love animals and am a big animal rights activist, but am not a true vegetarian...but, I do what I can do....maybe some day.

I stopped eating veal a long time ago! It really amazes me how people can be so stupid and cruel!

Hi Kristen,

This is an easy blog to just pass over and not get involved;  but out of respect for you, Kristen I did watch it.  It is something I don't like to think about, but I do thank you for calling our attention to this terrible practice.

I am not sophisticated enough to eat veal so I do feel good about that!  I have tried to be a better steward of the food chain by buying products that are organic (less chance of the corporate "mill" type process), "natural", or cage/pen free.  It does cost more but after watching the video it is certainly the humane thing to do if one is not a vegetarian.

Don't let up and continue to be your BOLD self!!!   No doubt your HTH(History Teaching Hubby) has shared Upton Sinclair's(now THERE was a true socialist!) THE JUNGLE with you!  My students just loved talking about what went on in the meat packing industry after reading excerpts from the book.  Certainly this video would fit in and you can see how social activism did lead to change for the better!

Thank you for standing up and for your willingness to champion a worthy cause.

Bruce,  I love your comments!  I agree, it is certainly easier to turn a blind eye to all the scary/wrong things in life, right?  But, that is irresponsible...as I always say, "Ignorance is No Excuse"! Glad you are a supporter and will help spread the word.  I am very well versed on Upton Sinclairs THe Jungle too :-)  You and I are alot alike...thanks again!!!

I have always liked little calves; this is so sad what was happening to those little guys.

Kristin, I am not sure how alike we are as I suspect you have a different worldview living up in "THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF WISCONSIN".   ^_~

I do know you are bright, caring, and that you are married to a husband with the best occupation in the world- A HISTORY TEACHER!!!!  That is better than living on a beach in Hawaii, right???

Seriously, I do appreciate your willingness to stand up for those without a voice.  Sharon "rescued" our now  plump dachshund, Maddie, because she was in an unsellable condition at the mall petstore.  I must admit now, that I didn't want another dog, but Maddie does appreciate SO much the love and affection she has in her home with us.  We wouldn't trade her for anything.

Thanks for caring, COMRADE!!!

You are funny Bruce!  Thanks for saving a life.  I actually am an active member in Milwaukee Pet Store protest group...we target petstores, such as Petland, etc that get their puppies from puppymills.  I encourage folks to adopt from an overcrowded shelter, where the animals are socialized and in better health, and cheaper, that what you get in any petstore.  I also have been to Madison to meet with legis. to try and get laws passed against puppy mills, etc.  I volunteer at my local shelter...animal rights is certainly my passion, although I can't make money doing that :-)  Take care buddy!

Hi Kristin,

What a sad story.......I am so glad the plant is now shut down.  After learning about how calves are raised for food consumption, I have not eaten veal for years.  Like Toula....I will never eat veal.  Thank you for spreading the word.

This is the main reason that I do not eat veal. Another fine example of man's inhumanity toward another living thing ☺☺☺

Kristin, count me in as a NO-VEAL-FOR-ME ActiveRainer.  Whenever we are making an eggplant or chicken parmigiana dish, my husband laments "I wish you would try veal."  NO WAY.  I wouldn't eat baby cows even if they were slaughtered in the most humane manner.  I had not seen that news report from HSUS, so thank you so much for your post.
