Numbers don't lie.

At the end of last week, I was a bit upset about the information going out about the First Time Home Buyer Tax Credit through Twitter and various blogs, both real estate and news media related.  Two of the blog posts I wrote in reaction to the situation, both at RErockstar.com, garnered a bit of attention and created a bit of discussion, but I wanted to see just how much they mattered in a world full of real estate blogs and internet chatter.

"First Time Home Buyer Tax Credit NOT Extended Depsite What You May Have Heard." and "Real Estate Bloggers And Journalists – Are We All That Different?" dealt with the issue of misinformation about the First Time Home Tax Credit and its extension.  Although I knew I could never reach everyone who had heard false information, I had hoped I could at least reach my readers and a few others to be sure they were being guided in the right direction.

From Friday to Monday, I paid special attention to my numbers on Google Analytics.  What I saw was telling.  People are hungry for information, especially when what they're searching for is shrouded in mystery and confusion.  Based on keyword searches (and nothing else), here are the percentages of traffic by queries involving the words "tax credit" and "extended" (or "extension"):

Friday, October 30 - 31.9%

Saturday, October 31 - 39.8%

Sunday, November 1 - 35.8%

Monday, November 2 - 59.1%

It doesn't take a genius to figure out that people are hungry for knowledge on the First Time Home Buyer Tax Credit and are out there searching for it.  Armed with that knowledge, I think both my post over at RErockstar.com about bloggers/journalists and the similar post I wrote here at ActiveRain, become slightly more important.  The consumer is out there searching, reading, and listening - even when we don't see them or hear from them in the comments.  We as an industry owe it to them to provide reliable information that they need and want.

Consider the source and check your resources is good advice.  We get our news and information in so many places these days--I sometimes miss Walter Cronkite!

Matt,

Some agents are ahead of the political process putting their desires out there as fact. Since it never really goes away once its on the "net," thats a very dangerous position to take.

Good information. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Too much incorrect information has appeared in blog posts.

Matt, you're so right with the comments on your blog.  There's been a lot of premature information posted as fact.  Nothing definite yet.

Matt, I had to tell my hubby that until they vote it in, it didn't happen. He keeps telling me it will and I keep saying we shall see... In the end I finally convinced him if he wanted to make a move, he should buy the property he likes and not care what the Gov does or doesn't do. The credit should not kill an opportunity for an investment or obtaining a roof over one's head. The amount is too small regarding something that may impact a family for over 30 years if they stay in the home. If they only stay for 4, how far did an avg $2K go in the scheme of paying those bills? Less than $200 per month on average if one is frugal and tries to hang onto the credit money?

Matt - I cannot believe that amount of misinformation going out, I have heard of local agents at open houses telling people that it has been extended, giving them all the details exept the truth that it hasn't even left the senate.

Matt the photo is great. It is important to study our analytics. We learn so much what the hot buttons are.

I do agree there is so much information lacking and too professional for the average Joe to understand.
I have gotten so many personal emails from consumers who wanted to clarify on the Tax Credit being used for land contracts and not just MI  but all over the country.

The vast difference between the blogospjere and hard news is that bloggers are often guilty of expressing opinions not backed up by facts! Good post my friend and I also enjoyed your previous video on the subject!

Too many jumped the gun on this topic and reported the tax credit has been extended. It very well may be soon.....But it's not a done deal yet.

AND, like you said in your post, we owe it to our clients to report facts, not rumors.

I second Craig. The information is in the public venues yet somehow people have managed to put a spin on things that ought not to be spinning in the direction the digital chatter has been going.

Matt - These numbers are higher than I would have expected.  I guess we'll probably have some actual news this week or next.

Matt:

The headlines I just pulled up today are, "Home Buyer Tax Credit Inches Toward Extension" and "House Oks Home Buyer Tax Credit Extension."  It seems to be a forgone conclusion right now but certainly is not etched in stone just yet.
