A broken camera that is NOT my Nikon D80My formerly trusty camera has been acting up lately. There are some issues with the Nikon bayonet mount that is affecting the auto-focus and the exposure of the image.

Now I am the first to admit that I am pretty rough on my cameras, but I had hoped to get more than three years from my Nikon D80. I have been eyeing a new camera for some time, but I want to buy it because I WANT to and not because I HAVE to!

The same thing happened with my computer. There were enough warning signs, an error message here, a power supply issue there. All were minor things that I ignored until all of a sudden … poof … and the machine was gone.

I am still using a computer that I borrowed from a friend who oddly enough keeps giving me coupons for a new one! I wonder why she keeps doing that?

Thriftown Market in Newnan GeorgiaYesterday I noticed a nail in my tire. Great, that’s all I need. But for whatever reason, I can’t seem to learn from experience. As long as the tire is holding air, I’ll probably ignore the problem. Of course, inevitably I will have a flat tire and wonder why I didn’t take care of the nail sooner.

Putting things off that you know you should address now almost always leads to more trouble down the road. I don’t know why, but I keep trying to get just “one more day” or “one more week” from items that are not designed to last forever.

Some would call me cheap. Others would call me lazy. I call it just me being me!

Richard, You aren't cheap, You are thrifty!  I do the same thing, and recently woke up to a flat tire.  And now my laptop is giving me fits....But I am sure I can get a few more months out of it.  My camera seems to be just fine (knock on wood).  Have a great day!

I can soooo relate to this... You've inspired me to behave with my files today and finish shredding the stuff that is more than 7 years old. I have 25 year old files sitting in my file cabinet. Seriously... What the heck do I need them for? I don't even touch them... (sigh)

Richard,

Three years on a camera isn't that old, but three years on a computer can he huge. You already know this...ignoring the nail problem isn't going to make it go away.

Duct tape, or bailing wire and rubber tubing, don't they fix everything? This past weekend to avoid thinking about some very unpleasant changes looming on the horizon I opted to bury my head in my daughters computer. It was on it's last leg, one of mine that I had built in 2001. I had brought over another one that I built a few years ago that has been fraught with issues. Then I brought a third with me, opened all 3 and made a good computer for her. She is thrilled, and the old computer she was using died the day I decided to do this. Easier to do for others though, isn't it?

Your post is very timely for me, so I guess I will take care of some things today. Just easier to go along with the way things have been, you know? If you don't do anything about it, it is not really happening.

Richard, sounds like Murphy's law got a hold of you this week. I'd get that tire fixed though because it will only go flat when you have to go to an important meeting.

Richard - it's being frugal, using things until they fall apart, I am often the same way with many things, only trading in my last laptop when a couple of keys that I used all the time stopped working.

Richard,

On a selfish note, get that camera and computer fixed/replaced!!! We need your photos!!!

The tire issue? I have this mental picture of you pushing a car that won't start, somewhere in the mountains as the tire is hissing...with a million dollar buyer in the car, or maybe helping push...no, that would be me if I did that...(not that I have a million dollar client, just my luck :)  )

Have a great one...

Richard:

I think this is more an issue of procrastination rather than frugality. The time and effort involved in searching for new cameras, computers, tires...

I will be calling today to set up my oil change (I have been putting that off.)

HMM, if the camera is giving you problems that means your pictures my look like mine.  In one sense that makes me look good, but, I prefer the quality that I know you produce.

Good luck on your decsion.  I just had a flat on my wood trailer, I wasn't home 10 min with a large load and it was sitting on the rim.  Good news...it's only flat on the bottom.  But it goes whap whap whap when I pull it down the road now!

You are so right. It's just you being you! But putting it off will only cost you more down the road...especially that tire issue. You just know that tire will go flat on you when it's pouring outside, you have clients in your car and you're showing rural property down a dirt road. Oh, and you'll have no air in your spare because you haven't checked it in some time and because of your location you won't have cell service to call for help!!!

I know this will happen because you just described me in your post!!!

We've been there and done that, in less than two months, its been: new car, new cell phone, 2 new computers and now??? new camera also!

We keep hearing Kaching!  You are so right, would rather it be when we want to NOT cause we HAD to!  Good luck to you!

Richard,  I'm with Craig.  Get the tire fixed!  I really don't want to have to come rescue you when it goes flat in the middle of nowhere.  And I would because I love your photos.  You are my photo mentor and you didn't even know it, so take care of yourself, your tires, your camera and your computer.

BTW.  Give your poor friend back her computer.  You know, they're practically cheap these days, and with that coupon...
