I purchased a home about a month ago to live in, fix up and eventually resell.  Since moving in, I have contacted numerous companies, contractors, handymen, etc.  I'm amazed at how many of them have come out, and never followed up.  I never get the quote, or someone never shows up for the job, whatever.   One local Tucson heating and cooling company, a name you would all recognize, came out to bid a new HVAC system.  When I didn't hear back, I went on to their website and sent them a note through the "contact me" link.  I got a call back the next morning, full of apologies and explanations of a broken fax machine, and they promised to get me the bid later that day.  I never heard from them again!

I'm tired of chasing people!  What would happen if I just blew off a lead?  Or never returned calls?  No one would hire me, that's what!

So I'm looking for recommendations for a handyman in the Oro Valley/Catalina area.  Someone that is good, wants my money, and will show up!  Any suggestions?

The good news for me though is that I am becoming an excellent handyman in my own right!  Who knew I could intall my own light fixtures!

I've had similar problems finding good people to do work around the home. if you call 10 contractors.  Maybe three will return the calls. On the whole they're not very organized. We were going through boom in the economy when this was happening. Good luck with your projects

Isn't this sad? You woud think in today's economy everyone would really be on their game. I have had similar situations recently myself. So frustrating! Not sure how close Mesa is to you, but I do have a friend there that is in need of work.....I will send him an email to see if this area is somewhere he would consider work. He is a great guy, great handyman.

Hi Dawn,

It is amazing to hear that this is still the norm for contractors. As Darrell mentioned in the boom time it was very typical. Knowing business is down now, I am shocked to hear that it is still the norm. I had a new hot water heater installed 1 1/2 years ago.  I only got billed a couple months ago. I kept calling the plumber to let them know I wanted to pay them and had not received a bill. I can't believe in letting 1 year pass to get paid.

Dawn, congratulations on installing your own light fixtures ... reminds me of something like "necessity is the mother of invention" ... reinventing ourselves.  Fixing things ourselves takes more time, but has that thrill of accomplishment.  Have a great day.
