Duplicate Content- It All Depends!

I wrote a post a few weeks ago about the truth about the duplicate content, you can click here to read it if you missed it. If you have any questions about duplicate content, this is a must read.

Remember that it always depends! What is your goal? Everything you do on line should be weighed and aligned with what your online marketing goals are. What works for one person may not work for another.

In that post I have a video with Matt Cutts directly from Google who clarifies all your concerns about duplicate content.

There are a few things that you need to take into consideration that go beyond my post about duplicate content:

1. The Google spiders will choose what they consider "THE BEST" of your content to bring to the searchers.

2. Duplicate content does dilute your link power which Matt Cutts talks about this in the video so if you are concerned you need to watch the video.

3. Links won't go as deep into your sites if you are having to divide them up.

And last but not least- you DO NOT  get penalized for duplicate content.

How does your link power get diluted? If you have several websites and blogs and you have 20 links- you are dividing those links up between let's say two sites- you are giving each site only 10 links instead of benefiting one site with 20 links.

The other issue is that if you have 20 good links and you have to divide them up between your sites you are not able to go as deep as you need to go to bring your pagerank up where you may wish it to go.

The choice is up to you. Do you want to have a strong website with links to your site that will steadily climb to the top or do you want the quick hit and run type presence where your posts go to the top of page one for your keywords one day and then fall off the face of Google the next?

Matt Cutts talks about how you can point your links to one URL and tell Google that this is the site you want Google search engines to rank and pay attention to. There is a lot of information on how to do this on the Google Webmaster website.

So what is the best way for you to take advantage of duplicate content but yet make your website or your blog the main focus?

Use your Active Rain Blog to write your posts on and then link to your website and outside blog from your Active Rain blog. The search engines love Active Rain. Use this to your advantage. I am probably guilty of splitting my links up too much.  I need to get back to more linking.

Katerina, today must be the day for SEO ranking articles.  Earlier today I was reading an e-mail update from Brad Carroll over at Dakno Marketing about website ranking and the importance of directing blogs, photoblogs etc. to you website for SEO ranking.  The folks at Dakno are suggesting using sub-domains for blogs and photoblogs.  Example www.jimewilliams.com l blog.jimewilliams.com l photos.jimewilliams.com,  What are your thoughts on this technique for SEO ranking.

As always enjoy reading your articles.

Thanks,

I have been trying to find out if it is right to have the same content on five different blog sites. Now I know.  How do you link to other blogs.

Katerina, you seem to always be ahead of the curve. I wonder if you do all this yourself as far as your website is concerned.

What's Interesting is Digg still considers(rejects) any posting from AR as Spam, but okay if I post from anywhere else the same article or info...mmm

Charles- I do all my SEO work myself. I have a VA team who does what I tell them to do as far as what to implement. But they don't write my posts and they don't write my titles, tags, descriptions and they don't do my keyword research. Only I do that. After I got screwed big time by SEO masters and snake oil vendors- I took it all into my own hands, went on a learning spree for a year and then implemented what I learned.  I became excited and passionate about this. Real Estate is our first priority but I enjoy SEO and online marketing so much that I put together other sites for different online services and products. I only wish I could clone myself because I have more ideas than I have time.

But our VA does all our listing inputting into our website, realbird, craigslist, etc. We carry just too many listings for me to do that by myself. We also have a full time staff. One of our daughters is our listing manager and short sale processer- Nestor and I do all the negotiations but she does the initial packages, etc. One of our sons is our expired marketing (direct mail) manager and has some short sale files to process as well. We typically carry between 40 to 50 listings with 18 of those being under contract at any given time. Nestor and I market for new listings, I do all the blogging and online networking and he does all the phone calls to our database and database management.  We have 2 buyers agents that handle our buyers. So that is how I am able to do all of this:) I also homeschool our 7 yr old son. Katerina

Katerina, This is so true!  Since we had the capacity to use the new signature, I linked my website to my sig and almost instantly noticed a rise in my visitors to my website.  Last week, we got 10 new buyers and they aren't just leads, 3 have already been in our cars and the other 7 are active in their client Gateways!  It's been amazing and needless to say, we're THRILLED!

Have a wonderful Wednesday...

Katrina, You are always on top of SEO and I have acquired so much information from reading your blog and truly appreciate all the time you put into them.  Hopefully, I have tried to be a good student and do all the MUSTS the correct way.  Your hard work seems to be working well for Nestor and you.

It sounds as if I have been going about this backwards. I post first on my website, then copy into Active Rain about 24 hours later. Sounds as if I should to Active Rain first.

Katerina, thank you for the clear path on how to do the links, with the main post being on AR. Clearly your year studying has paid off handsomely for your family and business, and of course, clients.

Katerina, Thanks for the good information in this post.  I have wondered about this.  I wonder about one thing.  What is the benefit of having an "Outside" blog?  Any thoughts?

Vicky- that depends. But if you want to rise on the search engines and you are not there by yourself and you don't have inbound links coming from strong authoritative sites then you need to rethink your linking strategy. Look at each link as a vote for your website. If you want the spiders to count your votes- you need to get votes:)

Thanks for discussing duplicate content again. I will go to your other post to check to see if you have more information on the link part of it. I think I am still a little lost on what you mean by posting it in AR then to the outside blog. Do you mean have part of the original blog and then a link to read the full one that takes you to the AR blog?
