How far ahead do you plan? If it’s less than a year, you might be short-changing yourself.

As 2009 rapidly draws to a close, it’s time to start planning for the new year. And with all of the dramatic changes in the economy and the real estate market, it is more important than ever to make adjustments to our strategies.

For a lot of us, the last few years have involved a lot of “changing on the fly” and many of our business practices have been reactive and not proactive.

But the market has settled down somewhat, and while it is not the robust market that we would like, at least we have a pretty good idea of what lies ahead and can plan appropriately.

So with less than two months to go in this year, it’s time to get started on those business plans for next year.

And let’s take control our own destinies!

Already started working on 2010...and the five year plan is in the works! Richard, what kind of camera do you use to capture such great pictures? I am in the market for a new one.

It you don't have short and long range goals you are really missing it. Planning is not reviewing your schedule on Friday for next Monday!

I wonder how many agents actually have a business plan?

I start out with the questions -

Where do I want to be a year from now and where do I want to be 5 years from now?

Then back up with a plan to get there.

I'm taking a webinar on friday about business planning! I've never really done it before, believe it or not!

Agree with you... I've been working on my business plan for next year for the past month. Soon to finish and gear up for the following year. What we do today will be our turn out in two to three months....

I have never been much of a pre-planner, but last year I decided to bite the bullet and at least make an effort. My plans were much more on strategy than income, but since they go hand-in-hand, I figured it would work. What I was amazed at was how much more purposeful I felt about my business!

Richard: One of my big plans for next year is to get my Broker's license. Well, more to the point, take the Broker licensing courses, and probably test at the beginning of 2011. When I sit down to my business planning, this goal will be in there.

Richard...for this month I have planned through the 20th...last day of Deer Hunting. After that, I have a strong plan through the end of 2010 and a dream for 2011.

Richard - We are expecting a second MAJOR round of foreclosures in our area , so for us it is Round #2. All we can do is sit in the corner long enough to get our cuts stitched up and a spray of water.

But being prepared is half the battle ! Lok at what has worked in your local market and duplicate those results , let go of what didn't work for you.

I do all of my planning a year out. I will have my whole 2010 plan doned by the end of the month and ready to implement right after that.

Indeed, Richard. Planning is a cornerstone for teachers, and as one, I should have known to plan for real estate. Sadly, I didn't when I first started out, but now that I do know, I'm ready to go. Thanks for the reminder to be proactive, not reactive. Things work out better that way.

We are in the middle of planning right now. New look for the web site and the launch of a new blog.
