This is a follow up post for the first one I wrote on Activerain.  I just received some new comments yesterday on it, and that got me thinking about what I have learned since then.

#1.  Great service is NOT enough to grow your business anymore!

Wow, I know I am going to get blistered after this one, but hang with me.  I am not saying that I do not believe in great service, nor am I saying great service isn't a must.  I am simply saying it is not enough anymore to grow your business from start to finish.  For our business, providing great service is like the bare minimum to keep what you already have.  If I mess up a loan, I am pretty much done with that referral source.  At least until the next guy screws up worse than I did.  (you know its true!)

#2.  It is naive to ever think great service was enough!

-Xerox invented the GUI, but Microsoft marketed and sold it.
-Apple first pushed the GUI with personal computers, but Microsoft marketed and sold it.
-Forefront Corp. developed the first PC office suite, but again Microsoft marketed and sold it.

Do you see the picture here?  It doesn't always matter who is the best, but it does matter who the consumer thinks is the best.  It matters how you market yourself to your targeted client base, and you better stay on your toes or you will get left behind.

#3.  Great service is still the key!

You have to learn how to market yourself in effective ways, BUT when that is said and done, you better have the great service to back it up.  Face it, in this business we are selling our service.  Even though we must find new and better ways to sell it... it better still be pretty darned good once they buy it.

Olan....  good to see you back. You make some good points. The one that I have a problem with is how some market themselves. Some aren't that good, but they market themselves good enough, staying in the public eye, that it could hurt your business, until they fall down.... fall down from false promises or lack of follow up. You can only sell yourself so long, until it catches up with you.

In regards to if you screw up, you are done. One and done?  Not always... things happen. it depends on your relationship with that person. Here is a good reminder.  Do You Inspire Loyalty Amongst Your Clients?

Overall... again, some good reminders.

Olan,

Well put. Marketing is so important. Without it the phone doesn't ring and the loan apps don't appear on your website box. That's the first step, get customers. Then comes the equally important step. Give them uniquely qualified service and they'll remember you and soon the referrals begin calling. Once the base is productive enough, you can choose where to take your marketing.

Jeff,

Your point illustrates why makreting is sooooo important.  If the scum-bags of the world are out there getting customers, we need to market all the more to make sure they don't get any!  The consumers out there will never know about our GREAT service if they never know about us.

Mary and Esko,

Thanks for the comments.

Actually, over time Great Service will grow your buisiness from word of mouth marketing.  You are right, be visible and market yourself.  It works.

You have to do both. Marketing gets your name out there. Word of mouth is a more personal and can help a consumer make a decision to use you now.

Successful business is like the results of a good recipe. Leave out one important ingredient and the meal is destroyed. Good business is an accumulation of service, knowledge, technology, empathy, listening, communication, marketing, inegrity, commitment, flexibility, confidence, and follow up. Great service is one of the ingredients that most businesses do not pay enough attention to.

Doug,

I think you are right on.  Many professionals start out focussing so much on one aspect of their business that other areas suffer.  That is the problem.  Service is vital, but you can't just sit around delivering world-class service and ignoring all the other ingredients of building a strong business!

you're right Doug... A loan officer is only good for his last deal... Every deal we must prove ourselves... one mistake or screw up can cause a loan officer many deals down the road...

Your business begins and ends with great service.  The difference is that so many agents promise great service and deliver far less.

Deliver what you promise, and nothing more, and you will be miles ahead of most agents.  It will set the tone for the balance of your career.
