I don't know how to word this right, so I'll just word it.

Communication cares.

The biggest gripe I've ever had with Real Estate, Sales, Relationships, or anything for that matter seems a simple concept.  So, why is it so damn complicated to get a answer, let alone a straight one?

It boggles my mind and I haven't touched LSD since 1992.  Now THAT, boggled my freaking mind.

Call me a sailor, call me a sport, but of all our duties in this Industry (running numbers, selling deals, working on commission, kissing babies, and taking blood samples) why is Communication so hard?  No, I mean it.

Many will practice the philosophy of only returning certain calls because they (those calls) afford certain accommodations.  I respect that business philosophy in as much as I won't punch them in the skull when meeting their greed-ridden ass in the back alley behind a fine dining restauraunt.  Or maybe they owe someone money, in which case, I won't go Rocky on them ... cite first Rocky Film.

Call people back folks!  Christ, I'm not one for lectures and I certainly am not Joel Osteen, but that seems to be a no-brainer as defined.

I had a dream a few days ago that everyone was competent, caring, and considerate.  When I awoke in a cold sweat, with a tear driven to my cheek and a smirk delivered dangerously towards my right temple, I looked out the window and saw a bird take a flying dump on my garage.  It reminded me of something... none of us are any different.

You can wave your financial earnings, fame status, sexual promiscuity, and new set of Cutco knives all you want, but the only thing it really gets you ... is something it won't.

For the most part, I like people.  I call them back, whether it's good news or bad ... or neither.

Communication cares.  Of all my faults, that's not one of them.

If you've read this far, you deserve some blues...

Jason, for "communication" to take place both parties have to be 100% "present"---and more than in just the physical sense-----and that is why it is so rare.

I have been guilty of lack of communication with clients when I have their home listed and nothing is happening.  I just hate calling to say that "the market is still slow and no offers", but I have made an effort by making a  list and calling them at least every other week.

As for buyers, I don't seem to have that same problem.  And if someone leaves me a message... I certainly call them back.

It's called common courtesy ... yet so many have so much false piety that they think it's beneath them.  The sadder part ... they are playing communication roulette with their client's best interests.  It's all about common sense.  Lots of folks don't have any.

Jason..Communication..Isn't that why we are all here..But then again not everyone is like us..Loved the Doors ..saw them live at the Arena in Philly ..(gone now) Jim Morrison jumped off the stage and the crowd went wild..but that was back in the late 60's...You weren't even born yet...:0)

Sorry to tell you this but they quit making good LSD by 1972. Wait, did I say that? Now as far a communication, my clients want it often even if I have nothing NEW to add!

I recently worked with two mortgage dudes.  One was one the ball, emailing status updates twice a day and keeping all of us in the loop.  the other one I had to call several times to find out anything.  Which one do you think I will want to work with again?

Jason,

Afraid of becoming a nihilarian are we?

"why is Communication so hard?"

The answer is simple.

1.  Lack of eduction.

2.  Selective hearing.

3.  Bad manors.

 4.  A total lack of a moral foundation.

"For the most part, I like people.  I call them back, whether it's good news or bad ... or neither"  This speaks well of you today.

So you "dream a few days ago that everyone was competent, caring, and considerate."  I'm lucky, I only have to remember my Grand Parents, my Great Grand Parents and their friends.

Jason, I read this last night..late and tired from driving all day. Now this AM I am re-reading it AFTER reading your comments on a very controversial blog...more like a food fight.

Is this a response to your joking over there? I knew you were joking...anyone that really knows you would have picked it up.

Buell - Very true.  While being "there" physically, it does wonders more when you are "there" in all facets.

Tammy - I've had to revamp my skills on the communication factor every step of the way.  I would love to sit hear and write that I'm the next best thing to chipped ham in regards to communicating, yet there is plenty of room to evolve.  I have a feeling there always will be.

Carol - What?  I kid:)  This world can always use a bit more common courtesy.

Alan - Those studies, though I haven't seen them, make sense to me.  I need to meet more of those clients.  They'd love me, even if they hated me.

Hannah - No I was not, just reincarnated;)  I think I pretty much know every lyric to every song they ever did.  It's that concert in my head.  Here's one with Jimmy dancing.  Not sure if it is tribal or his version of a snake gone vertical.

Nevin -  Lol, I saw those knives in action... seem to be a quality product.  As far as communion, that's probably a typo... or not;)

Russell - Well, that explains the bunk placebo I got in 1994.  I just wanted an excuse for these those voices in my head.

Thank you, Barbara.  I have two ears as well:)

Missy - That seems to be a great point of selling experience.  Those knives cut through rope and pennies like magic.

Lane - If I were licensed in your area, ME.  Point taken, though.

Bill - I actually had to look up "nihilarian" but I only wish it was so trivial.  But it isn't.  As typical, your words resonate as wise.  I'll check out the link:)

Missy - No, this wasn't a response to me joking over there.  This is a response to the general atmosphere I see, hear about, and live in the industry.  And I love food fights, as long as I have cottage cheese in hand:)

Good stuff....I hate getting calls from clients that say a loan officer hasn't called them back.  ridiculous.  Why be in this business if you're not going to engage in the relationship.  either you're in or you're out.

J-Sard ! - I will call my clients back, even with no updates - just to let them know I am monitoring their needs.

... it kills me when other Agents dont return calls, ven when I leave messages about offers on their listings !?!?!

You're right, 'communication cares' !

A lack of communication can cause the death of what would otherwise be a great deal my friend.

Hi Jason,

Excellent post! I can't tell you how many deals I have gotten from borrowers who did not qualify but referred me to someone who did just because I callled them back. People just want someone to let them know and treat them with respect. And what could be worse then a realtor calling you to ask why you never got back to thier client?

P.S.

For Hannah I think I may have been at that concert but that period is a bit hazy.

From the desk of David Dee,

Jason, I hear ya loud and clear. I run into some agents who states in their voicemail that they only answer phone calls during certain hours BUT NEVER return the phone calls! It boggles my mind at why some people are unresponsive at times.

Dear Jason,

Communication is hard only because the majority of people are idiots (present company and all AR members excluded of course!). Most people would not tell you your hair is on fire or you have spinach in your teeth, or "by the way I had a foreclosure last year and I owe $60K on credit cards". The last two are deal killers in just about every lenders eyes.

My brother I say hang in there. It will get better. Keep smiling!!

Bettag - Succinctly put.  I concur wholeheartedly.

Russell - Yeah, I know.  I was probably born in the wrong era:)

Sheldon -  Maybe they're just too busy:)  If so, you should just convince them to start referring some business to a chap like you.

JL - That's a fact.  I've witnessed such on all sides of the equation.

Steve - I prefer dealing with folks who feel that way ("People just want someone to let them know and treat them with respect").  Thanks, Steve.  And by the way, that's one concert I wish I could have been at...

David - I hear the same about some Mortgage Folks.  Both boggle my mind as well.  That seems to be one of the more simpler duties of our occupation.

Betina- Oh, I'm an idiot.  However, I call people back.  I want the whole world to know I'm an idiot directly from the horse's mouth.  I don't like heresy;)
