$26 Window Treatments from Big Lots!

When we moved into our house, I decided to position our bed on the only wall where it would fit.  Since then we've furnished the adjoining sitting room with a loveseat, TV and some workout equipment.  I thought it'd be nice to be able to view the TV from our bed and connect a phone to the phone jack on the other side of the room, but the bed would not fit on the wall between the windows on that wall.  I'd been brainstorming about window treatments that would make the bed look okay in front of the windows, but thought I'd wait until we got new bedroom furniture.  Well, now that I've decided to quit my job to go back to college to study interior design, it's not likely that we will be getting new furniture anytime soon.  We'll just have to hang on to the ornamental bed that we purchased with our company discount, my husband's dressers from when he was a kid, my first sofa, the bedside tables I picked up at a garage sale and various other items that I've recycled for members of my family.  So, I decided to look for an inexpensive way to create a nice backdrop for our bed.  My search led me to Big Lots where I found two sheer panels and two solid taupe panels for $26!  Here are the before and after pictures of my room.  Please note that the only new items in the room are the curtains.  This just goes to show that you don't have to spend alot of money to "redesign" a space.  I'm so pleased with the way it turned out, I'm not sure that I would get new furniture if I could afford it! Now I just need to convince my husband to let me paint since we've lived with the new construction paint for a few years.  :-)

Hi Charissa,

Great job!  I like the bed on the window wall.  Now the bed is the star of the show!  A great paint color would make it even more fabulous.

Thanks, guys!  It's even more romantic than it looks.  All the flowers in the room are silk flowers I used in my wedding almost 9 years ago.  I know swags are out, but the swag over the bed is actually two of the pew markers put together.  The plaque underneath it is something my aunt put together as a wedding gift with the origin of both our names and it says something to the effect of "Steven Robinett and Charissa Fish were united in holy matrimony on August 8, 1998."  All the photos in the room are from our wedding and I have our wedding album on display in the sitting room.  My husband just loves all the flowers!  :-)

I like the new furniture placement too. It's great that your husband is loving it too...that is what counts. I could never get away with the romantic, pink and feminine look! (At least we both agree on Ocean Blue, Dark Woods, Creamy Whites, and a permissable stack of books accumulating by each side of the bed.)

I was being sarcastic about my husband loving the flowers.  I'm sure he hates it!  I just have the excuse that it's a "wedding themed" room.  He can't object too much to that and there were flowers in our wedding!  :-)  Actually, I was planning on redecorating when we got new furniture, but now that's been put on hold until I start making money again.  Isn't he great?

That is just too funny! I almost always recommend the window scarves that match your panels from Big Lots to my clients!!! There are some shown in my before and afters on my website. You just can't beat the price, they come in all the right colors to match literally anyone's home, they are easy to put up, and the look is great too. They look so heavenly in your bedroom!

Rachel, I adore your website!  You've done a great job.  I am bookmarking this blog so that I can refer back to it when I start working on my own.  I love that you have an interior design background as well.  I'm starting school in August and will be getting a Bachelor's degree in Interior Design, but I plan on specializing in Staging and Redesign when I start my business.  Just curious, would you say your ASP certification was more or less valuable than your interior design education in preparing you for a staging career?
