Carlsbad, CA–It appears owners of San Diego real estate–and those who remodeled their homes in 2003-2005, may have been spared the corrosive and noxious results that can stem from certain Chinese drywall products.

Most of the sulphur-laden Chinese drywall was shipped in 2004-2005 to Hurricane Katrina-ravaged states that were trying to repair and rebuild their storm damaged homes.

Florida, Louisiana and other states battered by Hurricane Katrina are facing a secondary assault– this time from poisonous  Chinese drywall that was imported to help bolster supplies needed for repair and construction of homes damaged by the hurricane. It was also apparently used during the building boom that exploded across the country during the early and mid-2000’s.

But what about San Diego real estate and the homes constructed during the building boom?

It appears San Diego homes may have dodged the sulphur bullet.

Even so, how can you tell if you have toxic Chinese drywall in your home or business?

Not sure yet I've heard very little of this was shipped to CA. At least let's hope so. So many in FL are impacted by this, it's a real shame.

Lynda: I believe we in California have been largely spared from this noxious product. Am hesitant to wish for another layer of government intervention to inspect these products--and wonder if the building trades already have the means in place to vet them prior to mass usage?

So far, it appears the bulk of the Chinese drywall is showing up in the Southeast.  There is evidence to suggest that this is because of the increased humidity in these areas.  Recently, a large development in the American Southwest was discovered to be affected by Chinese drywall.  Because the humidity levels were lower, these homes were largely asymptomatic and did not show the corrosion typical of Chinese drywall.

The first Chinese drywall lawsuit begins this month and here is some good information on this ongoing issue: http://www.chinese-drywall-answers.com/. Among other problems, people living with Chinese drywall have also suffered eye, respiratory, and sinus problems in addition to problems in their homes such as awful odors and metal corrosion. Some 500 million pounds of Chinese drywall were imported into the U.S., impacting about 100,000 homes.
