Realtors what does your car say about you?

Do you know what car your dentist drives?

Do you know what car your attorney drives?

Do you know what car your Realtor drives?

Which one of these choices do you think most people know the answer to?  Exactly!  Real Estate Agents are the only ones whose vehicles are ‘out in the open’, sort of speak.  Realtors, what is your vehicle saying about you?

cheap car = bad agent?

Is your car a mess because you work all the time, or is it always freshly detailed, showing that you are organized and careful?  Is your car on its last leg, because finances are not quite what they should be, or is it an expensive vehicle denoting that your Real Estate business is thriving?  Do you drive a ‘green’ vehicle, showing concern for the environment, or do you loaf around in a gas guzzler?

Whether you want to accept it or not, your car, as the extension of yourself and your business, can help you land that next deal, or nix it for you.  What are your thoughts on this subject?

Hi Mirela~ I don't think we need to drive an expensive car as Realtors.  They just need to be clean and tidy and in good condition.

Vickie:  Clean and tidy is indeed very important.  It denotes organization and attention to details.

When I started in Real Estate I was driving a very practical 6 year old Toyota Camry LE.  It was nice, but not over the top.  I now drive a 6 year old Lexus RX 300.  4 wheel drive is critical in the winter where I live and the car offers a nice balance of success and frugality.  At least that's my take.

Keeping the car clean and presentable is a definitely must.  But, I actually had a client tell me he preferred a Realtor with a modest car vs. an expensive flashy car.  To him the agent with the more modest car was hungrier and would work harder to get the job done, whereas the flashy realtor was already making a nice living and wouldn't cater as much.  You just never know what sellers will be attracted to.  It's good to be you and nobody else but you. :)

Dan:  Smart man!  Success & frugality...  I like the way you think!

Lexus has a good reputation.

As Realtors, dependability in a vehicle is a must!

Mirela I'm with you! I like to see my Realtors in nice cars. As a home inspector I drive a hummer to every home inspection. My Realtors love it and our clients do to? Image is everything with David Home Inspection.David Home Inspection Services

I purchased my Lexus LS430 used (and negotiated for it like I negotiate for my clients to buy a house:) I did not set out to purchase this particular brand and model. I wanted a "people transporter" = a car where 4 adults could comfortably fit. This was the first one that fit the bill, it was a VERY comfy ride and my clients love it, too!

Mirela, I used to have two cars, one was the one I would drive around customers in when I had to, the other was a Corvette convertible, my fun car, that I would occasionally drive to appointments.  I had an elderly lady customer who absolutely loved it and let her husband follow us in their car.  I recently traded/sold both of these cars for a sensible four-door sedan because I thought I needed to be more conservative, what was I thinking?

Anyone who chooses their agent based on the kind of car they drive is not someone I want to do business with. I don't judge a buyer's ability to buy based on their car, wardrobe or any other material factor. I expect to be treated the same way.

Mirela,

A Good Post!  a clean car is very important if you want to make an impression on a client.

Mirela, The car an agent pulls up in, is in my opinion, a statement about his or her success or lack of.  I would be put off if an agent pulled up in front of my property in a beat up or disheveled car and on the other hand if an agent pulled up in a ridiculously expensive car, I would be put off as well.

"You only have one chance at a first impression!". Thanks for your post!

Good impressions are so important.  The first impression is the most important.  I always drive a clean car when meeting my clients.

I have been a BMW girl since I was 21, after witnessing an extraordinary accident being avoided due to the remarkable ability of a BMW driven at breakneck speeds on the German autobahn.   The way the car handles is remarkable.  'My oriental sister' (a client/friend) always remarks when she's in my car:  "I keep meaning to increase my life insurance policy before I come to the Beach and get in your car!"  Only one speeding ticket in the past several years.  Safe car; fun drive.  Clients like it too; even my oriental sister...

...So my car says:  I'm into performance!

Most of the time that's what it says.  The other times it just says:  "Neglected and abused; please take me to a car wash!"  Really!  Why doesn't anyone fess up about our rigorous schedules and the abuse we put our vehicles through?

I'm guilty!  Are you?

Mirela, I believe in a clean and tidy car! It is hard to keep the inside tidy, since I am a hardworking agent and my car seems to be my office! My business has increased since I purchased my Lincoln MKZ......just love it!

This is a timely question because I'm in the process of buying a car this week after being hit by another driver.  I've been looking for a used vehicle that's nice, but not too high-end (I've had clients tell me the same thing Jody mentioned), and one that comfortably sits 4 adults.  I'm leaning toward the same style of SUV I had, partly because it's a great, comfortable car, and partly because it did so well in the accident. I agree with the other posters, though, that a clean, well-kept car is what's important, assuming it's not like the red one you posted above!

I beleive you can have an "office in your vehicle" and do so neatly.

I have one medium size box type container in the back seat...if I need to drive around more people I just move it to the back cargo area ( I have a 2004 Jeep Cherokee Laredo).

Some agents have stuff all over the place in their vehicles and it looks a mess. Just think what will happen to all that paperwork if you have to stop quickly.

May I also add the car needs not not only look clean but smell clean too! If you vehicle is clean on the outside but the inside smells like last weeks lunch and gym sneakers...it is not appealing to clients.
