This phenomenon has recently happened to me (more accurately - perhaps in the last year), hence I'd like to share that with you. Very appropriately, discussing it here on the ultimate real estate blogging platform as part of my effort to encourage you to take on Blogging For Business - if you like to see some successes in this area.

Why Blog? Why Write?

If someone were to ask me for ONE thing that I can point out about my recent real estate successes, it would be "blogging" ie writing. It's not so much that I am an awesome writer, but it's a skill that I didn't know I had when I first took on this challenge here over 3 years ago.

Blogging ie writing captures your thoughts, strategies and ideas. The discipline and endurance needed here (Blogging Active Rain) requires serious effort and commitment to put these ideas thoughtfully and methodically. As a result, it fulfilling and it leaves a legacy of what you are.

Although just a simple act, not everyone has the persistence to put forth one post after another. Hence, when someone tells me that Points don't matter to them. I said, Yeah right. Points matter when it shows commitment to the task you set before you.

If writing doesn't come naturally to you, learn it. Learn how to clearly and concisely put your thoughts into well-organized ideas. When you think you are not a good writer, then maybe you are. But it doesn't have to stay that way. You can learn. Learn from others. Learn to refine your style and find your voice.

Your collection of blogs say alot about you.

There is nothing like the power of the written word. It's affirmation that your thought-process is clear and your direction in your business is sound.

Loreena: I have visited your blog a few times recently, and I wanted to tell you what beautiful photography you have in your profile picture and also in your banner--your photo and the graphic design. Did you hire someone to set it up for you or did you do it yourself? Either way, it's really nice!

Loreena,  Writing is one of the most powerful ways to change the world we live in.  Talk is cheap and easily rebuffed.  Writing goes deap into the mind of a person and leaves an enduring impression.

Melissa - I used the same banner on my website. The company designed it for me. As for my profile picture, my good friend at church too it for me. He's an awesome photographer. There was also photoshopping in that too. I think you could take your photo and clean it up with Photoshop.

I agree Loreena that the points are almost like an internal tracking mechanism, an audit so to speak, of your participation and also TIME SERVED. Like jail? LOL. Seriously, you are one of the best here, which is obvious with the quality product you deliver. Keep up the good work. We all learn so much from you.

My blogging has changed a lot over the years. Only I've gotten farther from strategies, business stories, and the usual statistical posts. I'm not saying I'm doing it the right way.... not at all! But as you know, it takes a LOT of time to compile data and create charts for statistical posts, and even on a standard post, to make it professional, use proper grammar, get the right key words in the right order for SEO, and provide something that everyone else hasn't already written about (now that 3 times as many people are trying their hand at blogging) it can be exhausting. So I've been keeping things "light" lately. I'm waiting for those who are not going to stick with it to just drop out. It's inevitable that they will. And for now I'm just focusing on MY clients. I do have the advantage of being a native in my area, and know a LOT of people here who will read my blogs just for the fun of it. And they'll call or e-mail me if they have a specific question or need, and then I blog it. And of course, I'll be doing the year-end blogs and comparison charts, even when I feel like beating my head on my desk in frustration. LOL

Keep up the good work though. You're doing a great job of staying motivated, and providing great material that is in the best interests of the consumers. I hope you're getting a lot of LOYAL, MOTIVATED clients from this!

Good suggestion, same as in life. We need to plow through and learn to excell in things that are a challenge. Not saying we need to do them all but we need to do enough to understand them.

Hi Loreena...the points system keeps us accountable to ourselves and others. I find I know I need to Comment a min ten times per day and write min 10 Posts a week, not easy, but I make an effort and it comes.

Cheers Great Subject :O))

We are our own worst critic, but once we step beyond the "fear" and "Unknown" we can become our own best advisor.  This is a great post Loreena, as are all your posts.  :-)  I can relate 100 percent to your thoughts here as I experienced this first hand.

Good comments - many times I think that we know the business but have hard time putting it down on paper.  Consumers want information and want to know that they are working with a professional that knows their stuff.  Start small and the more you do blog the easier it gets!

Hi Loreena,

As you know, real estate and the real estate business has typically been a low barrier to entry kind of business.  I am of the opinion that things are changing with that though, and much of the change is in how the home buyers use the internet to learn about where they want to live, to look at homes, ...  hopefully this trend will start catching on more with home sellers but as of yet, in my area, few home owners think to look to the internet when finding the best person to sell their home.

Back to the barriers to entry.  I believe that over the past few years in some areas there have begun to be some barriers rising.  Those who start putting together great websites, and blogging about their areas first, gain a large advantage over those who wait, or those who have yet to enter the business.

I refer to the last 2+ years as a great time to be building the walls around your business so that you can rise to new levels now and even more so in the future when the volume starts coming back into the real estate markets and every Tom Dick & Harry start getting back into selling real estate because they think it will be easy money.  At least for me, am and will further be in a possition that anyone would have to spend vast amounts of money or litterally thousands of hours of time to begin to overcome the barriers I have erected.  As time goes by, my barriers become even more difficult for these people to overcome.

Keep up the great work, and consider also blogging on a platform that you own yourself, such as a blog on your own website, or a stand alone self hosted wordpress blog such as www.nj-realestate-agent.com

Cheers,

Jim

Larry - We all touch everyone in our very own ways.

Lisa - I have too. That's the only reason why this is the only marketing effort has ever worked for me. In part, it's also because it's the only marketing effort I give consistency to.

Missy - I take that word of advice seriously. Thanks for watching my back.

Janna - Likewise.

Fred - With the busi-ness from the business, I noticed I top about 7-8 posts maxed and max out 10 comments per day for about 5-6 days. I think that's good enough!

Rick - Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

It's so true.  I know writing is a weakness of mine.  I covered it up because I'm an excellent speaker.  If you can speak well people assume you can write well.  That is the basics of great blogging and I know it.  Thanks for pointing this out.
