In 2003 HomeGain first published a survey of the top do it yourself improvements a Seller could do to their house to yield a rate of return when Selling.  In 2007, they updated it and tomorrow will release the 2009 results.

Home Staging has steadily climbed in importance and is now the #2 action a Seller can do to make their house most marketable.  Check out the HomeGain blog for their press release:  http://blog.homegain.com/home-improvement/homegain-2009-top-12-home-improvements-survey-results/

Thanks for the update Jennie. I use this survey often. No surprise that staging is climbing to the top!

It has been frustrating to see several stagers still using the 2003 survey on their websites....2003 was a totally different market and times have changed.  We found the 2007 survey and have been incorporating that into our classes we teach for Community Education, but didn't know the 2009 will be released....tommorrow!  So thank you for sharing that knowledge!!!!  I did notice though, that the second category, in the 2007 HomeGains survey we are using, the % of realtors that recommend staging is almost 100%, the 82% shown above reminds me of the 2003 survey.  I'll have to relook at ours again.

ok, so I went back, and of course you go thru the Homegains website by zipcode...so in my area it was 92% of realtors recommend staging.  However, I realize that your chart above is National.....so, guess I just cleared up my own confusion...I like seeing the National numbers as well.  Thank you again!!!

Yes - I think 82% is more accurate for the study.  When it showed over 90% of agents recommend - I know that cannot be true for national stats as there are still areas around the country where Staging is pretty new.  Agents may know about Staging, but I would say about 25-50% incorporate professional Staging with their listings.  We have a long way to go - and yet this study will help us all get clients on board with what we know works!

Jennie,

Great news!  It's nice to see that home staging as a whole is acknowledged as an important part of marketing a home.  The number of agents suggesting home staging is on the rise and the more the word gets out the better for all of us.  Thanks for sharing the Home Gain survey...very interesting to see.

Thank you for posting.  The more the world is educated on the power and results of staging equates to more homes being sold -- happy sellers, happy buyers, happy realtors, happy stagers.
