Steakburger Big Secret for 40 years?

I didn't know. I've seen the sign for years now as I drive up or down I-5 or Highway 99. It's an old retro-looking sign and occasionally I wondered if the food was any good and whether encroaching 'progress' would be it's demise.

Today I stopped in and fell in love!

This is a business that's been in one place and family-owned and family-run for over 40 years. From the moment I entered the front door, I was hooked. While I was waiting for my lunch date to arrive, I read the history of Steakburger and became a complete fan. The Steakburger has been manned and operated by 4 or 5 generations of the same family. How cool is that?

While you're pondering the coolness of a successful family owned business, I'll tell you that they also have a putt-putt golf course out the back that was put there back in the sixties (if I recall the quick read of the history). It's a charming little place and I will be taking my family there for golf soon.

Meanwhile, when my lunch date arrived we ordered our hamburgers. I had the hamburger with sourdough bread, french fries, and (oh yum!!!) a pineapple milkshake. Doggone good! It was a lot of food and I eventually ate nearly all of it. The people there were really friendly and I just loved this visit.

As it happens, the location where Steakburger is and has been for 40+ years, is also within a half mile walking distance of quite a range of housing options. From rentals to condos to large homes built in 2006. Prices range (today's market) from $54,900 to $389,000. There is even a property available on over an acre of land. Don't you just love the family owned eateries.  Here in MD we have Reeters - it's a seafood spot.  In CT, where I'm from, you have Alderios.  Cheesecake Factory has nothing on these places.

Lynn,

This sounds wonderful This is a very tough business and to stay there for 40 years means that the owners know  what they are doing, and people are loyal

I always think the family owned places are better when they have been there for a while. Here we have so many and they are all really good.

Syreeta, I agree with you, good local-owned restaurants are usually so much better than a chain restaurant.

Jon, they were there before the interstate was there, so I'm sure they have earned all the loyal fans they have. Plus they just got a new one today :)

Charles, I agree with you. Sometimes we've had some, um, 'interesting' experiences in our travels when we have stopped at local diners in strange towns. Mostly though, the ambiance and satisfaction of supporting a 'mom and pop' makes up for the surprises.

A pineapple milkshake! I love pineapple milkshakes. I think I will go to foster's freeze (our local hamburger joint) tomorrow and get one for myself. Thanks for the push.

Robert S, oh-yeah! When I was a kid there was a burger place that had the best selection of milkshakes - I'd rotate through my favorites - banana, pineapple, butterscotch, and cherry.  ymmm
