Prevent Contractor Fraud

Many homeowners are now taking advantage of the Home Renovation Tax Credit and are remodeling their homes.  If you are considering hiring a contractor to do the work there are some things to watch out for to prevent contractor fraud.

  1. If they are not listed in the phone book they may not be legitimate and could disappear after they receive your money.
  2. They will only accept cash.  If they will not take a cheque and credit card, they likely do not want the money to be traced.  A variety of payment options should be available.  A legitimate company will be claiming their income with the government.
  3. The contractor wants all of the money up front.  Never pay before the job is finished.  You want to be able to get them to come back to correct any mistakes and complete the job to your satisfaction.  There is no incentive for them to do the work if they have already received payment.
  4. If they are soliciting door to door, this should cause you to ask questions.  A business that is reliable and does good work is usually kept busy just by word of mouth.
  5. Insist on a written estimate and receipts.
  6. They offer especially low rates because your house has been chosen as a "demonstration" project.
  7. The contractor will not provide an address.
  8. You only get a special low price if you sign the contract today.
  9. They will not provide references.

Always ask for references and contact a couple of them and always get a couple of quotes for any work or repair work.  Don't pay for repairs that are not needed.

So....  The home renovation tax act is a Canadian thing?

Do contractors in Canada have to be Licensed, Bonded and Insured?  In Oregon and I'm fairly sure the rest of USA they do. In Oregon, you can check on the status of their license, see if they've had complaints and check the number of bond claims (all available on-line).  I wouldn't count on a phone book ad as having value, and cell phones are not typcially listed; but I'd sure check references.  In my experience even the best contractors want a deposit (because they sometimes don't get paid...) Gail makes some good points and we do hear about people getting ripped off--despite the repeated warnings like those in this post.  The scammers have really persuasive arguments.  This list is a good "red-flag" check list.
