I happened across the Mark Twain Awards last night on the television. And there were honouring one of my all time favourite comedians Bill Cosby, so I had to stay and watch.
Many celebrities and comedians dropped by to say a word or two on his behalf, and talked a bit about Mr. Cosby's barrier-shattering part as the half of a espionage team in I-Spy (with Robert Culp)... which was originally designed to be two white spies, but Rob (then 13) and Carl Reiner decided that Bill Cosby has the chops to play that role, after seeing his "Noah" routine on the Tonight Show (with Jack Paar).
Fellow comics, Jerry Seinfeld, Sinbad, Chris Rock as well as actors who'd worked with him over the years, came to pay tribute to a great comedian. Rita Moreno dropped by to sing him a song. Rita was his opening act for many of his Las Vegas performances. She's still got chops... check this out.
Here's Malcolm, talking about "Mr. Cosby" and his time on the Cosby Show.
And Here's Phylicia Rashad discussing the same show.
Thoroughly enjoyable. If you haven't seen it, and you get a chance... I'm sure it'll be playing over and over on PBS. Set your DVR.

I like the Cos....he's been good I think to the black population in his efforts to invest within the community. For me??? He's been great to all America. he's a leader and comedian who is clean, and he lives with a vision and a purpose. Forget the color b/c he's a leader for em all!
Alan - Bill Cosby is a class act. Period. I saw part of this show last night, but I need to record it and watch the whole thing. Love the story about how Malcolm Jamal-Warner almost wasn't Theo.
Alan, I love Bill Cosby. My InLaws took my wife and I to see him a few years back. My favorite part of the whole show was the dentist bit. I couldn't stop laughing. The guy is just flat out funny.
Alan...The man was always a class act, Ruffled a few feathers with his theories on education, and fatherhood but was willing to speak his mind...and being Authentic is a good thing when judged by history.
Larry - I had the privilige to attend two of Cos's performances... one here, at Golf Mill Theatre in the round, and One in Las Vegas (with Lola Falanna as the opening act... remember her?... at Golf Mill he was humble, classy and clean... but in Vegas... ohmigosh... what a surprise... as filthy as some of the best.
Jason - and they played the clip of a very young Theo... I remembered that bit... with the monopoly money... funny, funny, stuff.
Ian - I used to know the dentist bit by heart. A very funny routine.
Steve - a class act all the way around.
Gene - the football routine.. I remember that one... "so he grabbed his head!!!!" very funny.
I think Jason said it best "Bill Cosby is a class act!" The quality and delivery of his work is the best!! I liked Steve's comment about Cosby being authentic and it is a good thing..Amen!!

Bill Cosby is great. He had a rough spot a number of years ago, but the quality of his work has always been up there wiht the best.
