Soon the Hawaii Superferry will be arriving on the Hawaiian islands, it has been a major controversy here.  A portion of the public has requested an Environmental Impact Study to be done, the request has been denied and it has been fast tracked forward.

This "Superferry" will allow travelers and their vehicles to travel island to island freely.  A lot  of people think that this is a great idea, "why not, how fun this will be!" That was my train of thought at first, until I saw the seriousness of the situation.  The fact that we haven't had a way to transport our cars from island to island easily like this has allowed us to keep  invasive species from being spread around very rapidly.  There is a terrible Qoqui tree frog problem in some areas on the Big Island, their high pitched mating call starts at sunset and doesn't stop till sunrise.  It has hurt the property values in those areas along with the residents peace of mind.  I think that when the cars and trucks move from island to island the eggs from this tree frog will be carried on the tires and wheel wells and will will cause rapid spreading of serious invasive species.  There are numerous other plant and animal species that could easily be spread with the superferry.

Another issue is the risk of injuring the Humpback whales that we so vigilantly have protected through the years.  They come to this island chain from Alaska to give birth.  This large catamaran  will be traveling at high speeds and will likely collide with these spectacular mammals.

It looks like it's a done deal, this Superferry is in route to the islands now.  You can bet you won't find me supporting it!

Karen,  Is this being pushed through for tourism or locals? They say a new invasive species arrives in the Great Lakes every 8 months. Hope that doesn't happen in Hawaii.

Ditto on Gary's response - the freighters and boaters moving from the Great Lakes to inland lakes introduce species not natural to our lakes and upset the balance of the environment. Normally by the time the discovery is made it is because of the damage to the natural balance that highlights it and clean up efforts are very extensive (as well as costly). Hawaii is a beautiful state. This is not my idea of progress.

Hi Mary, this smells like corporate greed to me.  Who cares about invasive species, or harming humpback whales, as long as someone somewhere is making a lot of MONEY!

As it turns out we (the taxpayers) have given hundreds of thousands of dollars for this  superferry.  The Governer, Linda Lingle (R) has been a big supporter.  Evidently the millitary already has a contract in place with the superferry.  They are selling it as good for the locals, good for the tourist.  I think you hit the nail on the head Terry. Corprate greed.  If they really thought that an environmental study would show that the inpact will be acceptable, they would be happy to do it. We have small areas of tree frogs on Maui already that the Maui invasive species committee goes out each night and works on the areas so that it won't get out of control. The other issue on Maui is that it will be docked at our only large dock that all of our freight comes in at,  it has very little parking space and is basically in the middle of town, which means that the hundreds of cars coming off and waiting to go on the ferry are going to make an already busy area a mess.

Gloval warming and acid rain cannot be ignored any longer.  Why are these greedy people involved in sustaining their econmic monopolies via air lines, power grids and running these enormous cruise ships are going to stop destroying the environment.  Corporate greed if you bloody well ask me.  We really need to protest against this. The invasive speicies brought in via these giant gross polluting platforms has contributed to the mess we face in many districts on the big island where the frogs have gone wild and there is not end in site of their migration that must be stopped. Keep corporate greed out of the state of hawaii.  Wake up everyone and tell them acid rain is killing our plant life and forests.  Airplanes destroy ozone and burn fossil fuels equal to thousands of cars per flight.  Acid rain polutes our land water and everything it lands upon.  Pass the word.  Stop the airplanes and the cruise ships NOW before it is too late.

Environmental education is lacking and the only way to stop this disgrace.
