Have you ever been on the phone talking with someone and they hear a beep on their phone and immediately say: "Oh, someone is trying to reach  me, I have to go."

Is it me or does that make you feel like your call is not important?  Does it sound to you like the party is telling you the other call is WAY more important, so Good-Bye!

Do you practice phone etiquette?  Do you make each person you are talking with feel their call is important?  Come on, tell me the truth!

Dorie...

If I am expecting an important call about a closing or some other urgent matter, I will politely excuse myself after explaining the reason!

Richard,

And that is perfectly understandable. I've had people just automatically show they are afraid they might be missing something and quickly move onto the next call. When I'm in a store I guess I feel the same thing when a sales person answers the phone when they are waiting on a customer and starts taking another order!

I can only talk to one person at a time, so ringing phones go to voicemail!

Hi Dorie, I agree, You can only talk to one person at a time and voice mail is GREAT!! I think people appreciate you for  not interrupting them to take another call.  Thanks for sharing.

Hi Barbara,

You are right...voicemail is great. Paying attention to your caller and finishing the time with them is important.

Dorie

I continue to speak the person on the telephone, put them on hold is rude.

Good luck and success.

Hi Lou,

You are right and I'm glad you honor the person you are speaking with common courtesy.

I do that when I'm closing on the conversation that I was in--otherwise, I finish what I started and don't acknowledge the 'beep' so that the person on the line knows that they are my only concern at that time.

Hi Debe,

I think that is important to the person you are speaking with to let them know they are your only concern at that time.

The second call just goes to message and I call them back... I don't like it when people do that to me so I avoid doing it to others.

That is good to hear! It is annoying when people do that to me!

I HAVE had that happen, and sometimes it is me that is saying I have to go.  I specialize in short sales and if and when a bank calls me back, I take it!

Evelyn,

There are always graceful ways to say I have to go. I'm really talking about the ones who always say that when they get a beep..like the next phone call is way more important than the one they are currently on and they are afraid they will miss something. That is why we have ability to leave messages on our phones!

Oh Dorie,  I was on a business call the other day and heard that beep - which I ignored, as always....well, it was an important call for my husband and he was a little annoyed with me!

I never tell people I have another call, and when I am speaking to someone in person, I don't interrupt the conversation to take another call.  I have had both done to me, and it definitely says - "you're not as important to me as this call"!   I think it's really insensitive and rude.

Hi Mary,

I do too! I have a friend whenever her phone beeps says"Oh I have someone trying to get me, I must go." That is what we have voice mail for..we can pick up that call after we are finished with the first call and return the next one. If I call someone and they are on the phone I expect to leave a message for them.
