History Of Veterans Day - November 11th

So have you wondered why Veterans day is always on November 11th with no accounting for what day of the week it falls on?  Why not on Monday like most other holidays?

Here is a short History Of Veterans Day.  Go back to 1918 when an armistice or cessation of fighting went into effect during World War I.  The armistice began at 11:00 in the morning on November 11th, and I remember as a kid hearing the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month was "armistice day."

For years starting in 1938 Armistice day was the holiday until 1954 when it was changed to Veterans day and became a day to honor American Veterans of all wars.  They also changed the date to Monday to allow for a longer holiday.

In 1977 President Jerry Ford signed into law that starting in 1978, by the will of the American people, that the date would revert back to the 11th of November.

This is, I believe, more fitting as a special day to honor our Veterans and should not fluctuate.

Remember all our Veterans at 11:00 on 11/11/2009.

The picture of the flag flying is so beautiful. If that doesn't make you feel proud to be an American and grateful tio our soldiers you must be dead.

Gary,

Thank you so much for the history lesson about Veteran's Day.  Both my father and father-in-law, now deceased, were WW II veterans, and both earned a purple heart.  I still get teary eyed when hearing or singing a patriotic song.  We have so much to be thankful for in this country and we should never forget!

Years ago when I was on vacation with my family, there was a reunion of veterans meeting in our hotel.  If i recall correctly they were army.  I saw one of the veterans in the hall and said, "I would like to thank you for what you did for our country".

Wonderful post and a wonderful day to remember what is really important and who the real hero's are.  I was not aware of the significance of the 11th of November and so I thank you for the information and the pause in the hectic day.

I remember my grandfather, a WWI veteran repeating the '11th day of the 11th month.  Now my son, his great grandson is proudly serving in the Navy.  May we never forget to honor those who have served their country.

I too am glad it's back to November 11th.  And ten years ago this November 11th will mark my father (who is a veteran) being 10 years cancer free after his surgery.  I'll be celebrating my daddy on Wednesday.

Gary,  Beautiful picture, great blog.  I live a few miles from Camp LeJuene and Cherry Point on the coast of North Carolina.  As a result we are privileged to have a tremendous military influence around us.  I have sold several homes to retired military and occasionally have the privilege of working with active marines who are buying.  We love our Marines around here and I'm constantly reminded of the great debt we owe to all our military, past and present.

God bless our veterans and God bless you for reminding us.

Hi Gary, Thanks for reminding me of the history.  As an Army veteran myself, it makes me feel good and make me stick out my chest a bit more to know that we are appreciated for our service.  Our soldiers need encouragement endlessly.

Gary: Thank you for a great post and history lesson.  Our very small retirment community will be having a Veterans Day Presentation in which the MIA Flag will be added to our flagstaff to fly along with the American flag at the Clubhouse.  My husband, a 81 year young Korean veteran, will be one of two verterans doing the honor.   Some officers from the VFW will be on hand to aid in our small but so important remembrance ceremony.

Mike: thanks for the reminder re the poppies!  We will be sure to have them on hand.

Gary,

Thank you for providing this reminder for everyone.  There have been times when our veterans were looked down upon. I am very happy that the attitude towards the members of armed forces in is as positive as it is today.

I happen to live in a city where there is a Veterans' Hospital.  On Wednesday, besides attending the parades, I will be visiting wounded warriors at the Albuquerque VA Medical Center.

Happy Veterans Day!

The schools in my town of East Lyme, CT stay open on Veterans Day and veterans go into the schools to make presentations to the students.  When this was first proposed the veterans did not think it was a good idea because the kids were in school on a holiday.  Now everyone agrees that it is a good idea.  A different way to honor the vets, but a good way.

Thank-you for the post.  We all need to remember this a day to honor our veterans not just look at it as a day off holiday.

In our house, always.  Service in this county's military goes back to the revolutionary war and beyond, in every generation.  I have family on both sides of the Civil War, Revolutionary War.  My family is American history.  We don't run and we don't forget.

Gary, I would always rather celebrate the holiday on the "real" day. I am glad that Veteran's Day is this way. As the daughter of a Korean War Vet and the spouse of a Navy sailor we honor the military in our house 365 and on a special day we really reflect even deeper. Thanks for sharing.
