Busy As A Bee In Tucson, Arizona

It's amazing what you can capture with an ordinary camera if you have a little patience

Sales are picking up in Tucson for single family homes under $240,000. AR REALTOR Kevin Wood had a buyer referred by a business source from our BNI Chapter. I stopped by Kevin's office (Realty Executives of Southern Arizona on Kolb) but Kevin hadn't yet arrived.

It was early morning, and I had my camera, so I looked for something to photograph.

This is the time of year we love best here in the Old Pueblo. Daytime high in the 80s, nights down in the 60s. Flowers are in bloom, and the entrance to Realty Executives sported these purple flowers.

One lonesome bee (it isn't a honeybee) was checking me out, hovering like a helicopter six or eight feet away, darting off, and then coming back to the same spot.

I'm thinking the infra-red autofocus was in a spectrum he could see, because each time I focused the camera on him, he did an about-face and showed me his backside. LOL

Still, I was happy with the result. The bees are busy, and so are REALTORS and lenders in Tucson, AZ.

Hi Mike, Bees are really interesting to try and capture aren't they? The first class I had for learning how to take pictures and capture things in flight , I chose a bee and I think today I might do some better than for the class but taking these kinds of pictures take a lot of practice. But I agree with you Mike, I like the results you obtained. That first one is awesome. And a very cleaver analogy to tie it all together to REALTORS. Well done.

Isn't it great to be so near Thanksgiving - and still have bright flowers, busy bees...and wearing shorts on an 80 degree day? I enjoy living in Tucson - but LOVE the winters here!!!

Obviously this bee is a shutter bug.

My Grand Mother the "Cooger" was also "Flapper" she'd have liked this, because if you look real close at the last photo you can see "the bee's knees."

I don't think it is a "killer bee." Killer bees are common honeybees with a hangover. This guy didn't fly like a honey bee. He hovered, darted off sideways or vertically, and stopped on a dime, then hovered again. I think he kept coming back because he was interested in the nectar from the flowers. I got a shot of him on the flower, but is was out of focus.

To get the shots with the blue sky background, I kneeled to get under the bee looking up. The background in that first photo is someone's car. I was using the macro setting, and it blurred out the background nicely.

Thanks Mike, whenever your blog comes to the top of my list I know I will find something interesting. Who would think, this time, I would find bee butts.

My digital camera is pretty basic and there is always a small delay between my click and shutter opening. So if something is moving I have to take a bunch of pictures.

My wife just got a Yorky and she wanted pictures to send to her friends. The little guy won't stay still so I had several dog butt shots before I got one that worked.

I guess I could limber up my old 35mm but it is such a pain getting the pictures developed.

Mike - I don't believe there is ANYTHING that you could not turn into an interesting picture and post. You have the most creative mind!

My digital camera is a cheapie, and pretty basic. It's a Panasonic Lumix, but I've learned its idiosyncrasies and it works for me. I'll bet yours would do just as well.

The bee seemed to have two different "gears" for his wings when he was hovering. The first photo shows the slower of the two speeds for the wings. The bee was about 20' away in that first shot, but the camera has a 10X zoom.
