Unless you live in Michigan, or one of the other hard hit by unemployment states, the signing of H.R. 3548 by President Obama yesterday probably was good news to you because of the extension to the first time home buyers tax credit. Here, in my local area, I'm cheering because there will be thousands and thousands of out of work people who will continue to receive an unemployment check, for at least 20 more weeks.

How hard hit is my area by unemployment?   (Look at these numbers and try to remember that the numbers reflect real people and their lives, and isn't just data.)

Michigans overall unemployment rate at the end of September was reported to be 15.3 percent.    In Wayne County alone it was 18.3 percent.   The city of Detroit?   A staggering 28%.

Many of those people who were laid off at the beginning of this year, or late last year, have not found replacement jobs.   It has been reported that approximately 44,000 people in Michigan cashed their last unemployment checks in October.

Coming in to the winter months and having their unemployment benefits cease would be cruel.  Thank you to all of our government officials for taking care of this and giving an extended lifeline to those who so desperately need it.

When I read the news yesterday about the President signing this bill I was excited, and relieved, more so for those  who cashed their last unemployment checks then I was for future home buyers.   Needs first - wants later.

Agreed!  Michigan is so hard hit by the collapse of the economy, extending unemployment benefits simply makes sense.

Normally, I'd be saying, "come on, you know they can find some kind of job".  Not today.  When folks like up by the hundreds or thousands for job openings, extending unemployment is just one step away from public assistance.

Lenn,  When you hear of professionals (engineers, accountants, electricians, etc etc etc) trying to land ANY job (McDonalds, Home Depot, WalMart greeter) your heart aches.  One recent news report said that for every job opening, there are 285 applications.  Unbelievable.

Good point Kris...and we have our neighbors in Michigan in nightly positive thoughts knowing how difficult it must be for them during these challenging times.

Kris,  It sure makes me grateful for what I have!  I would not like to be in their shoes.

I feel bad for some areas hit harder than the rest. But I'm not sure about both. It seems like we are digging ourselves digger in a hole. Soon, we'll find ourselves so deep that we no longer can get ourselves out. We cant just forever print money, you know.

Sally and David,  Thank you for your kind thoughts.  Thoughts and prayers can go a long way to helping people, even if only a spirtual uplift.

Sara,  Me too. There hasn't been a family in Michigan that hasn't been affected by unemployment by one way or another - either a direct family member, a friend, a neighbor.  It's hard.

Loreen,   That's why I stated "Needs first, wants later."  People need to be able to eat, and keep their heat on, and have gas in their cars to get to a job interview.

Chris I had posted earlier in the week that everyone was forgetting the title of the bill was the Unemployment Extension Act of 2009 NOT a home buyer's tax credit bill.  Yesterday one of my clients lost their job so the tax credit means nothing but the unemployment benefits may mean everything to them over the winter months.

Cindy,   Ahh...the name of the bill :-)   I would be that many people didn't know this.  It is important that we remember this.  Thanks Cindy.

Kris, you know I am not much for government programs. But.........until someone in Michigan can figure out how to lower our small business tax, bring new industry here, we need to take care of the truly needy.

Kris what you say makes perfect sense.  It's great to try to stimulate the economy but people without jobs can't buy homes.  People without jobs are losing homes.

Missy,  In my eyes extending unemployment was a humane and neccesary thing to do.  You're absolutely right - until Michigan can attract and keep more business we have to do all we can to make sure those that need receive help.

Jenny,   It's a vicsious cycle.  No jobs, no money, no mortgage payments made.  It will keep going on until there are more jobs.

Chris you seem to have a very pragmatic approach to your views about politics and I have to agree with you on this one.

Michigan must find more jobs!  It must happen.

I am ever hopeful that it will.

Karen,   I'm ever hopeful also, but our elected officials realllllly need to work on attracting business and that can't be done with our high small business tax.

I am hoping for better days in your fair state.  That unemployment rate is painful.  I thought ours was at 15% but it could always be worse!  I think Vegas and Detroit needs to work on diversification of attracting businesses.  We all just learned.........the hard way
