A SMALL HELPING HAND FOR THE UNEMPLOYED IN MICHIGAN.  Of course, the question is, "what happens in 20 weeks?"

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Via Kris Wales - Macomb County MI real estate blog & homes for sale search site (Keller Williams Realty - Lakeside Market Center):
Unless you live in Michigan, or one of the other hard hit by unemployment states, the signing of H.R. 3548 by President Obama yesterday probably was good news to you because of the extension to the first time home buyers tax credit. Here, in my local area, I'm cheering because there will be thousands and thousands of out of work people who will continue to receive an unemployment check, for at least 20 more weeks.
How hard hit is my area by unemployment?   (Look at these numbers and try to remember that the numbers reflect real people and their lives, and isn't just data.)
Michigans overall unemployment rate at the end of September was reported to be 15.3 percent.    In Wayne County alone it was 18.3 percent.   The city of Detroit?   A staggering 28%.
Many of those people who were laid off at the beginning of this year, or late last year, have not found replacement jobs.   It has been reported that approximately 44,000 people in Michigan cashed their last unemployment checks in October.
Coming in to the winter months and having their unemployment benefits cease would be cruel.  Thank you to all of our government officials for taking care of this and giving an extended lifeline to those who so desperately need it.
When I read the news yesterday about the President signing this bill I was excited, and relieved, more so for those  who cashed their last unemployment checks then I was for future home buyers.   Needs first - wants later.
Lenn, thank you for reblogging.  I also have asked myself what will happen in 20 weeks.  That's such a short time..but for now, people can feed their families and have their furnaces on.
The American people voted for Change. The only Change they have is in their pockets. Great post
I am with you Lenn...  Unemployment in my area is 14%...and that doesn't count the self employed.  Thank Goodness for the extension!
Lenn,  I agree!  Where is the media getting this garbage when so many folks can't find a job.  Sounds like another media ploy prior to elections.  With all that this "administration" has done to destroy the country I wonder if things will ever get better.
Harry, My greatest disappointment was that the Republicans put McCain as a candidate and allowed this worthless gang in.
Lenn - Seems like we all agree on this one. I am all for helping folks when the bumps in life's road occur. But with some of the other ideas being tossed about in DC - I am opposed to removing all the bumps!
Lenn....There's NO LIGHT at the end of this tunnel.....NONE!! I fear there will be many more extensions, before this administration is out of the White House.
Lenn,
Just a simple question, where is all of the jobs that were supposed to have been or will be CREATED?
There have been times in our past when unemployment benefits were extended and I was so thankful because it directly affected our lives..there were no jobs.
I am so thankful that our government did this even though it does not directly affect my family it indirectly affects all of us.
Helping those that really need help is what is supposed to happen. Not bailing out large banks so that those in the higher up positions can take lavish vacations.  I don't even want to get started down that road, I really try to avoid rants.
Lenn:  I know that, while the extension of unemployment benefits is a good thing, it's going to create a huge political problem.  Since people will be taking benefits longer, the unemployment reports will inevitably rise. After all, it's a larger sample of time.  Just wait till Fox News sinks their teeth into this.  Forget why the stats are the way they are, go for the jugular.
Lenn,
Interesting that they still do not seem to be addressing the actual problem.  The key is not to throw money at it.
