Blogging RealtorMany of you do not know me here on Active Rain because I have not been blogging as regularly as one needs to do to keep on top of Google.

However, this morning, as I reflected on what I needed to do to get back at the top of Google ( a place that I held for over a year) in my home state of Rhode Island, it occurred to me that new Active Rainer's are probably in a state of confusion.   I will say that a couple of  emails from Mark Lebukner and a few other new Rainer's, asking questions prompted me to write this.

First of all, we have the Newbie Group. This is the biggest group here on Active Rain, and is a group to go in and post a question. It is also a group to introduce yourself, or have someone introduce you.

Experienced Active Rainer's will come to this group after they have learned the ropes to "give back". This group is for "new to Active Rain", not new Realtors, Appraiser's, Mortgage Brokers, Inspectors...You can be any of these but you are in the group to either teach or learn.

Brad Andersohn of Active Rain has probably the most complete set of questions and answers and descriptions that I know of and you would do well to read as many of those as you can. Most of Brads tutorial blogs can be found here in the FAQ Group.

All that being said, I personally like to keep things simple. I suspect a lot of that is because I am time limited. Therefor, the actual reason I am writing this is for those new Active Rainer's that cannot spend all day writing.

First of all, if you have not upgraded to a Rainmaker blog, then nothing you do will be visible to anyone outside of Active Rain. And while Active Rain is great for referrals, friends and amazing knowledge, it does not speak to your home town if no one can read it. If you want to upgrade now go here.

The simplest way that I have found to attract clients is to write about a place. You can pick just about any place nearby or at least within your realm of reach. For instance, you can write about any restaurant, event, neighborhood, girl scouts, schools, farms, cities, fire department, police department, playgrounds in your area.  The list is endless. Even if someone from your area has already done it, you can write it from your own perspective!

A couple of years back, I wrote about Warwick, RI, my hometown, and then I wrote a couple of follow up posts about the villages in Warwick, RI.  This past year I wrote about Warwick Neck, Highland Beach, Chelos (a restaurant), Harbor Lights ( a marina).  These are a very minute sampling of what some people write here at Active Rain. But I am here to tell you that even this small amount brings you recognition!

Last summer, when I wrote about Harbor Lights, the marina that I keep my boat in, I did it because I was hoping they would get some business out of it. About a month later, someone on my dock came up to me and said. "Whatever you are doing, keep doing it". The reason she said that was she went online to find a phone number for Harbor lights, and while she could not find the number, she said she found me "all over the place" and that now she knows more about me and my brokerage!

My best return on investment was a blog about Oakland beach.  I have sold four homes in Oakland Beach just since May. I consider myself and Oakland Beach expert. Note that there are not many comments on this post. But people do read them.

If I can do this, and I am an extreme introvert, then anyone can do it.

Pick a place and write a post. That's all there is to it. Make sure you repeat some of your title in that post so Google can find it. Then sit back and wait for people to contact you.

Karen, there are a number of blogs that I have written that have resulted in a number of phone calls, and have been a good source of business.

Nice to see you back in the Rain again.

Great post Karen - as you know, you were the first person that commented on something when I did my very first post - it must have been a question in the newbie group and it made all the difference.  Thank you for that and for this post to help others who are looking to expand their blogging presence.

Hi Linda, I checked out your blog and you are doing just fine! Your post about Kitty Hawk makes we want to go there and that's exactly what will bring you leads.

Gary, You're right! You are one that can "give back":) Glad you like Rhode Island in the Fall! It's one of the most beautiful times here.

Sara, Thankyou and keep on writing the way you do, you're doing great!

Diane, good to see you, my old friend:) I like "your" new photo too! Yes, we change, but we are still the same.

Rob, You're a Rainmaker already. I can see an addiction growing after reading some of your posts:)

Hi George, I will always come back. I really do love this place:) Active Rain is probably the single most important site that has helped me with my business in so many ways.

Dale, How are you?  It's nice to write a post and see so many old friends! Hope all is well.

Bill, You are absolutely right! Consistency and fresh content! (which is why I fell off the Google page) However, it does not take a lot to get right back up there!

Hello Ms Cathy:)  You have taken blogging and Social networking to the next level! I'm proud to have been a minute part of that:)

Karen, I'm not quite a newbie, but haven't really started blogging until recently.  I love to visit and read the posts to newbies as a refresher.  I always learn something new.

Hi Karen,

Thanks for the encouraging post. I am still procrasinating on blogging - although I have done a few. I realize the importance of consistancy and need to just do it!!

Erby, I guess a lot of people don't know about that group, but it's extremely informative.

Lora, I do the same. Of course I have to come back here, it's my group, lol, but I always learn something new when I do. I'm glad to hear that others appreciate it.

Dina, Your blogs are perfect for getting noticed on Google! They are about your area and the photos are great! Some people seem to just write and write daily, which amazes me and I actually like to write!  Just keep on doing what you are doing, but try to do at least one a week and get in the habit, because once you start getting busy from blogging, it's even harder to keep blogging!

A lot of good info, I didn't know that if I didn't have a rainmaker account it would show up outside of this website. I'm glad i didn't spend the next six months trying to get higher rating and not have anyone find out. The advice for writing about local establishments was also god, Ive been trying to find ways to portray my self as a local expert in my target area and I think that will be a great help.

Karen:  I would never have guessed that you are an extreme introvert!  So am I !  Funny how we are in a people business where we need to be out and in front of people but I try to accomplish that as much as possible through blogging and other technological tools.

Hi Daniar, You can always start writing and edit them later to make them public. Kind of like a practice run, but I would suggest getting them out there if you can.

Donna, I guess that's why we were drawn to each other! Although there is an extreme extrovert here in the Rain that I have an affinity with. I really believe that I did not get into Real Estate earlier because it "was" so people oriented. I can work one on one with someone without a problem, in fact, I am very good at that. Speaking to crowds, or making small talk at a party...not happening:( Hubby does that part:)

Great stuff, Karen.  I'm pretty sure the credit union will pay the $29 per month!  Thanks for the tip.
