The Royal couple, Charles and Camilla are visiting our beautiful city - they arrived late afternoon yesterday, and although Camilla admitted to being a bit jet-lagged they were "on show" for a few hours on the lawns of the  Legislature. The crowds welcomed them and even though a lot of people couldn't care less about the Royal family, the people of Victoria always turn out to see and cheer them.

It won't be long before they will be back again for the Winter Olypics in February 2010, in nearby Vancouver and Whistler. But for now, I'm sure they will enjoy our city which is now splendid in Autumn colours, with the golden leaves falling on the ground.

They look healthy and happy.  I'm glad the crowds turned out for them.

Interesting guests indeed.  I have always had an interest in the family even before my first visit to London in the late 50's.  I am surprised the country still supports the Royal Family.  Thanks for an interesting post.

How do you think Obama gets his $600,000 a year?
Who do you think payed for his inauguration ceremony?
Who pays for his house?
Who pays for his foreign visits?

You, the taxpayer.

In 2005 the Royal family cost the UK taxpayer 37 million pounds

The Obama presidential inauguration cost 150 million dollars

The President's travel budget is 3.4 million dollars / year

The White house costs 9 million dollars to run / year

Guarding the president costs 47 million dollars / year

So before you do away with the monarchy, just take a look at the alternative.

Susan - thanks for your response to my Royal Family Blog. Having been born in England I grew up with lots of information on the Royals, and I'm happy to see that they are still around! This is the 5th time Prince Charles has visited Victoria, the last time being with his sons William and Harry, when they went skiing.

Sandra thank you too for your response. I think that Victoria is in many ways more English than many English cities in the good old UK, and of course our city is named after Queen Victoria.

We had them first! Hamiltonians greeted them at Dundurn Castle and at the Haida. I'm sure they must be jet-lagged after all the time zones they have been in recently.

If we chose another head of state it would be a free for all. Every section of the country would be so busy protecting its turf ....
