LOUDOUN COUNTY VA YARD MAINTENANCE.   Turning a chore into a landscaping adventure.

EVEN THE YARD TRIMMINGS CAN OFFER A BIT OF LANDSCAPING STYLE AND BEAUTY.

Last week was my landscaping chores included trimming back the shrubs and ornamental grasses in preparation for (eeekk, I don't even want to whisper the word, winter).  However, I know it had to be done and we got to it.

TURNING YARD TRIMMINGS INTO LANDSCAPING ACCENTS.  I love ornamental grasses.  They are quite beautiful and decorative with a certain dominating feature, height.  They do, however, have to be cut back in the fall so they grow back healthy and strong in the late spring.  So, we got to it.  Chop, chop.

Ornamental Grasses

Tall Grasses Before Cutting Back.

WAIT!  Don't throw those beautiful grasses away.  Let's use them.

Tall Grass Cuttings Decorate the Landscaping.

It was simple to accomplish.  We just took the grass trimmings, bundled them and tied them to the fence posts.  Yes, the "fence" is decorative too.

Use your imagination and create an oasis in your landscaping.  This area is a bulb garden which in the Spring will be full of beautiful Tulips and Daffodils.  In the meantime, we still have a lovely scene.

Thanks Jay.  Mmmm.  Prince William is just about a week behind Loudoun for winter.

You can do it.  You can do it.

Very nice Lenn.  With the winter season coming in Florida, we don't need to cut the grass and trim quite as often.  Every other week instead of every week.

I didn't want to say the dreaded word either, but had to give in when all that white stuff started falling.  Nice work on the decoration too!

Gabe.  Don't rub it in or I'll have to remind you of the bugs.

Jesse and Kathy.  Eeeek!  The "S" word.  Last year we had a cumulative 1 inch or so.  Like dodging a bullet.

Lenn....Beautiful job....I love to see different landscape ideas.....However, I also love the pure white stuff and watching the grandchildren sledding down the small hills in the yard.

A good looking yard is always a big help in selling a property. 1st impressions go a long way!

Lenn...You have inspired me to get out in my own yard and get ready for Winter.  I get the pleasure of raking pinestraw! :-) Of course we re-use it around the trees and garden areas (Some people actually have to buy it).

Looks like the kind of work that I resist until I get started, but love it when I'm done!  Your landscape looks very similar to Nashville!

That's pretty clever. You know, trimming them has never been a problem for me. Having to clean up after the massacre is what I always dread.

Lenn - what a great idea!  I showed a property yesterday where the homeowner had raked up all the pine needles and used them as mulch under the trees.  It was quite beautiful.

It does look very peaceful out by the "fence." And, yes, clever approach to pampas grass or whatever they call it.

Here in Connecticut, we don't cut grasses back until very early spring.  The plumes add a nice touch throughout the winter and provide almost year-round interest.  Nice pictures!

Lenn:  Neat idea.  You certainly are a creative gal.  Wish I had a vision, any vision for my yard.  That's my husband's ball of wax.

Lenn, the bundled grass trimmings certainly do add a nice touch to your beautiful surrounding area.

Hi Lenn... this is a great idea and environmentally conscious too!  I have seen clients take plants/flowers and hang them to dry in the sun then use them as decoration in vases in their homes.  Very attractive and much less expensive than buying dried plants at a crafts or hobby store.

Lenn ~ Just got back in the house myself from blowing all the pine needles out of the drive way.  With the husband gone for a job in Fl.  I thought I would take this on myself.  I know I will be sore in the morning but it makes me feel good when its done.

Your yard is beautiful!!!  Great idea for your fence.  I think I have seen them spay painted before.  Hey X-mas is coming.  lol

Barbara.  Thanks.  I can survive with as little snow as possible.  You folks up north can handle the snow.  It just creates gridlock around here.

Bill.  Absolutely.  My goal in landscaping was minimal work.

Any.  Natural mulches are great.  I still use mulch but we get it free at the landfill.  Thanks Loudoun County.

Verlyn.  I've been known to procrastinate, but when the temp goes down, I have to get it done.

Loreena.  Isn't htat the case with everyone???

Lina.  I have some pines on my lot.  My community was once a Christmas Tree farm.

Gary.  I have about 4 different kinds, but I don't know what they are.  I just know they're lovely.

Paggy.  I cut mine back in the fall to reduce the wind damage during the winter.  It can be done either time.

Chris.  Just say, "Honey, thanks for doing the landscaping."

Brian.  Thanks.  That's my little "grotto".

Debi.  It is fall here and lots of chores for winter prep.

Steve.  I have some lovely "weeks" that I've cut from the side of the road and keep in pots inside.  They're beautiful.

Liz.  Thanks.  My yard is a work in progress.

June.  Good for you.  If you have sore muscles, you'll be glad you know why.

Those grasses bundled like that say autumn to a southern girl like me, but what I'm really looking forward to are the pictures of the tulips when they bloom!

Lenn:  What a clever idea and perfect for fall!  Your photos are beautiful too.  Those must be Fescue lawns..they are so beautiful this time of year!

Veeeery creative! There is only one time of year in which I don't view my neighbors huge, lovely trees with envy.

Might try some of the ornamental grasses next year for the back- they really add a nice touch. I'm not sure that the deer would leave them alone in the front!

Lisa.  That's because it's autumn.   I can't wait for the tulips either.

Diane.  The grass in my yard is still quite green.

Laurie.  No problem with the deer here.  Goodness knows there are a sufficiency of them.  I can't grow a lot of things for the deer.  I do want to figure out a way to thwart them next year.  Every spring, I itch to plant a variety of vegetables, peppers, tomatoes, but the deer eat the plants the first night.

Sheldon.  My lot is only wooded on the east side and the wind blows the leaves away from my home.  In the back I have only pines and even they are 40 yards away.

I don't have to rake at all.

Lenn, I love your idea of creating something out of the tall grass cuttings.  We have the same ornamental grass around our pool pump.  I love them, nice to look at, but a real bite to keep trimmed.  I dread bagging them up and this would be a nice idea for my home as well.  I'll have to do that the next time I attack the "grass monsters" as I so lovingly call them :)

Elizabeth.  I was reluctant to plant these "grass monsters" for years.  On the small lot that I had in my previous home in Bethesda MD, they just overwhelmed the landscaping.  However, with almost 2 acres, I was able to integrate them with good effect.  They provide a nice "height" to some landscaping arrangements.  I have some on each side of the house as a sort of "frame".
