Dan Cummings - MADD DashSeems we all slow down with age and as my training has escalated over the past few years it has been frustrating to see my best running time was before I joined Team in Training and really learned about the importance of variation on runs.

Last week at this time I was in the early miles of my slowest marathon in NYC.  Pat Murray and I planned to do the Miami Marathon but we never talked about how to approach the race so on marathon morning we went our separate ways,  in NY we decided to set an nice pace and enjoy the sights of the city which was great!

Yesterday I noticed there was a 5 mile race in New Haven so this morning I was off to the MADD Dash.  I felt pretty good considering I'd just finished a 26.2 mile marathon but at mile 4 with a time of 36:20 I figured chance are I would not make up a minute in the final mile for a new personal record in a 5 miles race so I settled in to a comfortable pace behind a follower.

The last mile was not a steep downhill but a nice gradual decline where I was able to pick up a little speed.  About 200 yards from the finish I could see the clock turn to mark 44 minutes and had to make a split second decision.  I opted to forget the fine follower and go for a PR, my first in almost two years!

By running standards I'm still not very fast but I was able to trim over 15 seconds off my quickest previous time to finish at 44:48.

Dan, nice to see you back in the Rain, and glad to see you are still running.  Did you do the Middletown 5K this year?

☼ Dan ☼  YOU ROCK...very inspiring whether in the or on FB!  I'm thinking "no" for the full at Disney in January but I'll be cheering you on!!!  I had to check this out and actually contact AR to find out what my password was...I guess it's been awhile!  Happy Monday!

Sandra... You could always surprise me with a cooked feast when I return from a local event.

Inna... I'm also training so I can keep up with you in January, picking an Oyseter Bar this time?

George... I did do Middletown but without any fanfare this year.

Susie... Now you have me wondering if I remember my password... Don't spend very much time here on ActiveRain and my login information is "saved" so I never have to think about it.  Are you going the carry a phone on the Half so I can send you motivational messages?  :-)

PROXY ERRORS.... now I remember why I gave up on this place....

I wasn't planning to carry my cell phone...do you really carry yours?  I guess I could on my belt with my gatorade/water.  Hmmm...don't forget this is ALL NEW for me!  1st real race...the 5k last month was really just a little run for a small private school for my friend.  THIS is different but still not as exciting at the Disney stuff!  I guess I'm gonna have to try one of those...sooner or later!  ☼

Ummmm...I think it's time to UPDATE my picture! Thankfully I don't look quite like "that" anymore.  :-)  It's a good change...even though I loved this picture for a long time.  All of AR looks different to me...all these crazy boxes under pictures and stuff.  What's up with that?  (do I really wanna know?)

Susie...  I do carry my cell phone and most times a better caliber camera in addition to my other gagets. It's not essential but sometimes I'll see an interesting shot along the way and if you clicked the link in posted above under "slowest marathon" you'll see several shot from NY last week.  If you have any quesitons on need to review your race night checklist just email or call.

Bill...  It has been awhile but I try to stop in for a visit every month or so...

THANKS for offering me some tips...I'm ready I think but knowing the girls I run with are running for time pace makes me think I'll be running alone - or more like with "however many" that I don't know.  Thank goodness for my Ipod!!  I ♥ it and look forward to a great run!  Hopefully the weather is perfect...maybe a bit chilly if I get my choice even...THAT will be the icing!  I don't plan to take a camera or much of anything else but you NEVER know with me!  HAH!!!  Time will tell...

PS...Talked to Suzanne in awhile?  She'll be SHOCKED to hear from me if I hunt her down.  Is she on FB or AR?  Do you know?

Susie.... Nothing wrong with running your own race, you don't want to go out to fast and tire out in the early miles so try not to get caught up in the adrenaline rush at the start.

Last contact with Suzanne was when I tried to get her out for lunch or dinner when I did the Providence Marathon.  She'd been in the hospital so she wasn't feeling up to it and she never did get into much social networking so she's keeping things pretty private, hasn't even been on AR much since she became ill.
