Whoa! Whatever it was I hope it doesn't visit my backyard!  LOL

Sincerely,

Wow! That's a really awesome photo though - uncovering the beauty within, whatever it was!

I have some trees in my yard that are suffering from the same thing and like you I am wondering what caused it.

My husband fancies himself as Paul Bunyon...don't know if he was wondering around your neighborhood

Interesting. I'm not sure if it's a disease or an insect that caused this. The tree looks wounded, but it's beautiful, almost like a piece of art.

It looks to me like someone hacked off a section of bark a while back...

Kathleen,  I'll post the answer tomorrow night -- but i don't think you have to worry in Massachusetts.

Ashley,   i took the photo just so everyone could guess what caused it and then found that the photo is kind of pretty.

June, Tomorrow night I will give you the answer -- but it might be a little different for your neighborhood.

Konnie,  Well, anyone from ActiveRain or their families would always be welcome in my neighborhood.

Marzena,  Great guesses -- but neither one was the cause in this case.

Janna,  I would have to say you are close - because something happened to the bark.

Almost looks like something that a bear would have done ☺☺☺

A big angry bear would be my guess.  Have a great day.

Gary, somebody must have been very hungry.  Ouch!  Poor tree!

Michael,  Great guess,  but not the right one.

Kevin,  Again, great guess.  But not the right answer.

Charles,   Very creative answer -- but not the right one.

Patricia,  Someone was hungry.  Who was it?

Hi Gary,

I too was thinking it looked like something a bear may have done. But now I have to think about what might have eaten or gnawed that much bark. Hmmm...do squirrels chew on bark?

Still no answer Gary? Is this a tree in Las Vegas? Can't be, but I do agree it is an awesome picture.

4:31pm • #15

Michael,  It was eaten, but not by a squirrel.

Terrie,  No this tree is on my Mom's property in the mountains of Wyoming.  And still no answer.  I will tell everyone in a few hours.  Thanks for stopping by.

The answer is this is a tree with some of the bark eaten by a moose.  Here is a picture of another where you can see the marks made by their teeth as they eat and another showing the top of the bark missing seven feet from the ground. And one of the moose.   I have watched deer and moose as they eat the branches and leaves of the aspen trees that have fallen on the ground.  They really seem to enjoy the taste of the trees.

Gary,

I was going to guess a flock of woodpeckers - but I see that is not the right answer. :)

Steve,  I have seen a woodpecker in that same tree.  He was much higher up and did not leave near as large a mark.  Thanks for stopping by.

I was going to say that whoever/whatever it was, probably had a huge itch or was very hungry ... and I probably wouldn't want to come face to face with one of them ... unless it was on the plate. :)

Whoa! Can you imagine the strength of the teeth that can do that? Ouch!

Debi

Sylvie,  They are incredible.  Recently i did two posts on them and called them Face to Face (parts 1 and 2).  And though it has been years ago, When I was a starving college student,  I had a license for one and it really tasted great.

Debi,  i had always though about the power and strength of the entire animal -- but  you got me thinking about the teeth.  I certainly wouldn't want one to bite me.

Hi Gary: I guess showing up late has paid off for me because I did not get to make a foolish guess!

:)

12:20am • #23

Matt,  Thanks for stopping by.  And I don't believe any guess that you would make would be foolish.  I should also tell you that a lot of people living here had no idea what caused this until someone from the Fish & Game Dept. mentioned it.
