Giving veterans their dueNovember 11 is Veteran's Day. It's a day to honor the living veterans that are currently serving or have served in the past.

How do we properly honor those brave men and women that risk everything to defend and preserve our nation? They place themselves in harms way under the most adverse conditions and complete their assigned missions with courage and conviction.

And let's not forget the families of our soldiers. They give up their loved ones as they are deployed overseas and live every day under the pall of potential catastrophe. Families are separated during the children's formative years and it really takes a toll on the spouse left behind.

Here's an idea: At this time, we have a lot of empty houses in this country that are owned by the government. And while there are some minor incentives for veterans to purchase the properties, it's time to really give them a break.

They need to be given credits for purchase based on years of service and priority in the bidding process. I think that $10,000 per year of active duty would be a starting point, but I'll support anything that properly rewards them for all that they have risked. I would also like to see disabled veterans getting free houses.

Why not? Who else is more worthy to benefit from these incentives?

And to all of the veterans reading this, I thank you for your service. And I appreciate your sacrifice from the bottom of my heart.

Hi Rchard,

You have proposed a wonderful idea for the Veterans! I'm seeing more use of VA loans lately but I'd much rather be giving the Veterans an additional perk!! Thhanks for the post.

Good Morning Richard, we agree 100% with you, except for the active duty part.  The same soldier puts his life on the line to keep ours free.  Some are lucky, while others are cut short.  We feel the soldier sent home early for injuries deserves as much as the lucky ones that gets back in one piece.

There are so many hard working people in this county, doing all the things they are supposed to be doing.  But they get the short end of the stick when it comes to mortgage relief, benefits and other perks that they so deserve.  I agree, our men and women serving this country make make huge sacrifices every day.  They are deserving of more.

Richard, this is a great idea. A Veteran should at least have a nice place to live when they return home. Thank you and you are welcome!

Richard, great idea, however you are making that age old mistake, believing that Congress enough common sense to follow through. Unfortunately, I have very little faith in our government, I love my country and it's people, but not much there for the over paid, over compensated, law makers.

Richard,

That is a fantastic idea! My 18 year old nephew just enlisted in the Marines and is going through bootcamp as I write. He'll miss celebrating Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Day with his family this year.

Dorie...

I think that is a win-win for the nation! Thanks, my friend.

A & P...

I think that those who suffer disabling injuries should get a FREE house! Thanks for adding your $.02.

Jody...

It's just a nice way to say "Thanks for your service!" And thanks for the comment.

Richard your title was good enough to just about stand on its own without the text of this blog! I am glad the VA loan is available for such, and I wouldn't be opposed to giving our armed services members even more. I am not sure about priority in bidding, but additional incentives certainly. They risk their lives for us, dang it if they don't deserve it! As for disabled vets, certainly those disabled while serving should get more than just a break on MIP, etc. Another thought provoking post, good job.

Richard - a great idea, however, I would limit this to those have served in combat zones. For those that didn't, I think the VA loan is a fantastic benefit. As for disable VETs and a free home, I think that needs some thought. What about the families of those who have fallen? Should they get anything out of this?

Richard:  Anything honoring those that are willing to put their own lives on the line for the good of our Country is something I'll get behind.

What a great idea to help the real estate market and our Veterans at the same time.

I just posted a blog with kudos for our Veterans also. Read it if you have time!

Good idea, Richard! As a pacifist, I do not agree with going to war, but I respect the service of those who did. They do deserve a break, a big one.

Cheers,

Robin

What a great win-win situation!  Now how do we go about getting it implemented?  And I want to repeat if I may: "And to all of the veterans reading this, I thank you for your service. And I appreciate your sacrifice from the bottom of my heart."

What a wonderful idea;  how about going a step further and modifying homes for the wounded vets who don't return home as physically whole as they left?  There are a lot of great ideas out there, that's for sure...but they make too much sense for our government to get behind them.

I just recommended this post for a feature. And I guess no matter how you cut it, we can't do enough for our veterans.

Richard...we owe a debt to our service people that we can never repay...but doing nothing is also not an answer!

I agree that Veteran's deserve to be honored and revered and your idea of 10K per year of service toward a home is a grand thought. I come from a strong military family and highly respect the sacrifices that are made every day by men and women who give service to their country here and abroad. Thank you Richard.

Richard,

This is a great idea for vets and I would add the family of fallen vets to the list.

If I am not mistaken this was proposed over a year ago. But I haven't a clue as to how it turned out. But it is a great idea.

Makes more sense than some of the bail out money sent to Wall street. We must help our Veterans.

Richard, I come from a family of military men, and I second your ideas here - We should, as a grateful nation, be doing more for these men and women.
