California Wine Country by Myrl Jeffcoat

I know many folks think that Jack London is a man's author.  There are probably far fewer women who cozy to his words.  I am one that does!

From the first time I picked up a Jack London book, I was hooked.  Visions invoked from his artfully crafted words came to life. "The Call of the Wild" - "White Fang" - "The Sea Wolf" - They grabbed my imagination and wouldn't easily let go.

Friday evening, I fell asleep thinking a little about his wanderings in life, especially along the Valley of the Moon - in beautiful California Wine Country.

I woke early Saturday morning - Napa Sonoma Wine Country, and its Valley of the Moon, needed a visitor.

Heading north and west from Sacramento approximately 60 miles, found me arriving at the threshold of London's footsteps.  Napa, Sonoma, St. Helena and Calistoga, a perfect place to photo capture the color of the autumn leaves, and to treasure away a few special bottles of wine, for Thanksgiving dinner.

It is amazing how fall gifts Wine Country this time of year - the spectacular colors, smells, and crisp autumn air, create a dalliance of delicacy to pamper the senses.

Thinking of Wine Country immediately creates visions of glasses filled with the fine wines nurtured better in Napa Valley than most any place on earth.  Cabernet Sauvignon, Gamay Beaujolais, Pinot Noir, Merlot - What are your favorites?

But Wine Country has other delights!  In Calistoga, Doc Wilkinson's Spa, is famous for its mud baths and other spa treatments; or you can simply marinate your frazzled soul in the warm mineral pools.  A special wine country weekend can take in a day of wine tasting, a stroll through the villages, a nice Italian dinner, and then off to a good night of sleep.  Begin day two by finding your way to the mud baths, a spa or the mineral pools.  By second day's end, you will be ready to face life's realities once again.

After leaving the Domaine Carneros Winery known for their sparkling wines, and its palatial location at the top of a magnificent Napa Valley hill, I traveled further along the road to Beringer Vineyards, next to the celebrated Culinary Institute of America at Greystone.  The Culinary Institute offers classes for culinary arts as well as for wine enthusiasts.  Charles Krug Winery is well placed across the road - helping make St. Helena, a powerhouse of Napa Valley wineries, and vintner mastery devoted to the grape.

Once finished with the shopping of wines, I drove to another area of the valley. Calistoga boasts its own "Old Faithful" Geyser.  Not unlike its counterpart in Yellowstone, this "Old Faithful" periodically bursts a natural fountain, on a less than predictable schedule, averaging about every 40 minutes.

Along the road to the geyser, a slight breeze caused the colors, yellow, gold, orange, red, purple, brown and green to perform a tango on the vines without intermission.

Several Jack London quotes came to mind Saturday and applied to circumstance.  They are as follows:

  • I would rather be a superb meteor, every atom of me in magnificent glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet.
  • Life is not a matter of holding good cards, but sometimes, playing a poor hand well.
  • One cannot violate the promptings of one's nature without having that nature recoil upon itself.
  • There is an ecstasy that marks the summit of life, and beyond, which life cannot rise.  And such is the paradox of living, this ecstasy comes when one is most alive, and it comes as a complete forgetfulness that one is alive.
  • You can't wait for inspiration. You have to go after it with a club.

"Darn the wheel of the world! Why must it continually turn over? Where is the reverse gear?"      ~Jack London

Actually, I often feel life this! haha.  I'm also a big Jack London fan, Myrl.  Anyone who loves adventure must be a fan of Jack London.

It doesn't surprise me that you like Jack London, Myrl. He's a perfect fit for your sense of adventure and free spirit. A few years ago, I went to Calistoga with my friend from Texas, Lady Jake the clown. If you'd like to see video of us at Old Faithful of Calistoga, here ya go:

Shirley - Oh yes!  That's another of London's GREAT quotes.  My two favorite authors are Jack London and John Steinbeck!  I could have hitched my wagon to either of those stars - NO PROBLEM:-)

Elizabeth - That's it!  I identify with the apparent spontaneous grasping of adventure London had.  I adore Lady Jake the clown.  It is always reassuring to know there are other whacked out people on this planet, other than me:-)  I have this other side of my nature that "tries" to be more refined. . . There is this constant battle for balance going within me most of the time; but I think you knew that:-)

I love the photos, Myrl-especially the first one.  Looks like the entry to one of the old plantations of the ante-bellum South.  I noticed that they were our native sycamore trees that lined the entry way to the winery.  I will tell my husband to visit here-he loves Jack London.

Debi - I'm fond of that quote too.  Unfortunately, I'm having trouble reconcilling it with another favorite quote from another great mind, "When you have a question without answer, step away so the answer can find you."   Which of the two quotes I decide to apply often depends on my mood, the scope of the problem, and what the Gods are up to:-)

Sharon - When I came upon that scene, I was reminded of Southern views as well.  There are quite a few sycamores in wine country.

Hi Myrl,

Thank you for all those wonderful photos. I enjoy good wine (in moderation of course, ahem!!) and have visited many wineries but have yet to make it to Napa Valley.

One of my favorite local wineries is the Flat Creek Estate just outside Lago Vista which is where I live. If you are ever in this part of the world I'd be delighted to take you there. You can check it out at http://www.flatcreekestate.com/

Steve - I love good wine too!  Unfortunately, I can't drink much of it because it gives me headaches.  But, if there is any left over, I freeze it into cubes, and bag them.  I use the wine cubes to help create sauces when I'm cooking. . .I know, I know, some folks are saying, "Leftover wine - what's that?"

Beyond the gorgeous photos and description of the area, Myrl - including the Jack London quotes made this a suberb post. I didn't know there was such a thing as left over wine! LOL

Are the grapes harvested year around, or is there a season?

Mary - For ALL things there is a season. . .This is autumn, Harvest Time is now!  I know, I am a creator of sauces.  So there is really no such thing as left over wine as you say.  Some is drank - some is consumed. . .:-)

Myrl, In the many times I've travelled to San Francisco, I never made it up to Napa.  Now I see what I missed and it's so beautiful.  Thank you for sharing these gorgeous photos!

Hi Myrl, I especially loved this post as it has been a number of years since I was in Northern Ca. Wine Country. I should do a new post with the many photos of So Cal ( Temecula )and show the contrast of these two areas. Be it North Central or Southern , California has an amazing wine industry. The extent of our wine industry is not such common knowledge. We think in terms of flowers, technology and medical research. But wine production is right up there.

Beautiful pictures, Myrl.  I enjoyed your quotes and thoughts about Jack London.  London's To Build a Fire  is still my all time favorite short story!

Carole - I think a return trip is in order. . .Don't you:-)

Terry - You can actually smell those grapes. . .It was glorious!

Tony and Darcy - It had been many years for me too.  Somehow, I had something fly through my head, and it sparked a renewed interest.  I was amazed, how fast the time was between re-reading a few of London's words, and my grabbing my camera and heading out the door to The Valley of the Moon.  It couldn't have been more than 10 hours.

William -I'd love to see pictures of the Temecula Wine Country, and other interests of the area.  I suspect the landscape there has changed dramatically over the years.  I was amazed at the wine industry growth in Napa-Sonoma counties on Saturday.  It's far larger, and far more beautiful than I had remembered.

Jennifer -I'm glad you enjoy the photos and the ride along. . .If you have any inclination to travel to Wine Country, I am certain you will find it worth your while.

Toula - Within a 100 mile radius of Sacramento, you can travel that will have you taking in all kinds of sites.  San Francisco, Wine Country, Sacramento, Gold Country, Lake Tahoe, and other amazing places.  You should try to make a trip one day!

Bruce - I think I may have missed "To Build a Fire."  I will look for it, and put it on my must read list.  Thanks for alerting me to it.

Laura -Trust me, you wouldn't be comfortable stomping grapes.  I tried it only once.  There are acids and tannins in grapes that burn and itch the feet in short order.  They don't tell you that in folk lore however.  But stomping grapes is such an iconic and romantic idea - when reality isn't getting into mischief:-)
