WOW, that's not much income!  Back then, people make twice the amount of their car, but today, they could make $25k and buy a car worth $40k.

Missy,

I'm hurt. I'm omitted.

It was a good year for babies.

I was born in 1948!

Before my time but one thing that people don't realize is that homes back then, didn't appreciate.  We didn't see appreciation until 1960, according to my Dad, the appraiser and builder on the west side of Michigan.

I wonder what our stats will look like to a person 61 years from now? My first home purchase was $5,200 in Cherrydale in Arlington, VA.

Great find Missy!  We have been railing against this for a loooong time.  And diligence is still required today.  I couldn't help but laugh at the fellow golfing at the beginning... felt like I was looking in a mirror. :)

Missy, wow.  I remember .25 cent gas.  I know my parents bought a summer home on the Jersey Shore for $1,100.  My first car in 1965 was $2400 wish I had that Mustang now!  Milk was still delivered to the door.  Things really have changed.  Now cars cost more than my first house did in the 1970's.

Missy, Wow is right. Gas for 16 cents! That doesn't even begin to cover the taxes on fuel now. Thanks for sharing.

I think that I resemble that dad on the golf course (but not that grandpa). I was around in 48, well, just barely, but I do remember 22 cents gas, 33 cents/pound ground beef, 10 cent coke machines, penny candy, etc. I was watching a Designed to Sell yesterday, it was a 50's home from Sherman Oaks, Ca which probably sold for about $12000 - $15000 when it was first sold. They were looking to get around $1,500,000.00 for it this year.

Wow, what some numbers. I must say I like those numbers more, but then again, I really cant comprehend what 10cents mean.

I'm not that old, but I remembered when gas was 69cents when I was in college just 13 years ago. Now, I jump in joy when gas is less than $2.50. What a world we live in.

INFLATION!

Missy, I loved the cartoon!  I do remember hearing from my mom what things cost back in the early '50's...like her house!  It's amazing and it was SO much money back then.

Missy,

I have seen this cartoon already, very cute. As for numbers, I was not yet born then... in another country.

The numbers are so telling...

I was born that year-

Just for perspective.  A lb of ground beef in 1968 was still only 69 cents.  20 years had seen just 20 cents!  thats about 1.5 % per year.

Now we are are told that 3% is moderate?

PS-

The original Mustang in 1963 was $1799!

Hi Missy!  How cool is that!  What happened to those good old days?!  'Everything is fine, everything is fine!'  I wish I could say that about America today.

Great memories--thanks for the video--you know I couldn't resist watching! :-)

Missy while that video was made in 1948 it looks like it was written for 2009!  I'm going to share this on my Facebook page.  Excellent, Excellent, Excellent!!!

Amazing, the cost of a house and car in '48 is what some people are paying a MONTH today. I tend to think it is more of an "overspending" attitude than just inflation.
