Be Strategic With Your Blog: A 6-Part Series for Newbies (Part 2)

My whole point in creating this series for you is to help you avoid the mistakes I - and so many other ActiveRain newbies - made when we first were getting our feet wet. Now, as I said in my first post in this series, Making the Most of ActiveRain:

Succeeding at ActiveRain will take work.
Succeeding at ActiveRain will take a commitment.
Succeeding at ActiveRain will take time.

One of the fastest ways to keep your commitment, make the most of your time, and work most efficiently at your new blog is to create a blogging strategy. Getting clear about your answers to some key questions before you begin will make your entire blogging experience better, and help you see returns much more quickly:

  1. What are your goals for blogging? Are they clearly defined, or clear as mud? Why are you blogging? What do you want to have happen as a result of your blogging on ActiveRain? Build business. Make friends. Find a mentor. Gain experience. Eventually write a book from all your posts. There are no right or wrong answers - there are only YOUR answers.

  2. Have you identified your target audience? Who will read your blog? The public? Other REALTORS? Creating a blogging strategy will help guarantee your success!Other players in support industries? Once you know who you're targeting with your posts, it becomes easier to tailor your posts to them and their needs. What you write for a prospective buyer in your community will likely be very different than what you will write for a mortgage broker or home inspector.

  3. Have you identified the topics and themes that are important to your target audience? Don't overlook this step. Find out what YOUR readers want to know, and tailor your blogs to that information. This process will help you niche your posts so that the readers you want are finding and reading your blogs.

  4. Do you ALWAYS include a call to action? Soooo many newbies and seasoned bloggers alike miss this one. At the end of every post, give your readers some instructions about what you want them to do next. Call you? Visit your Web site? Start an MLS search from a link to your site? People need guidance, so guide them.

Get strategic about your blogging before you begin, and you'll be well on your way to seeing tremendous success from your involvement in this amazing online community! And if you have any questions at all, don't hesitate to ask. That's why we're here. Trust me - I was where you are once. It gets easier and all the myriad returns are so well worth it!

Anna,

Great points all.  I have been going back and really fine tuning by checking my statistics and seeing what is getting the most traffic.  That tells a story all in itself.

By the way how are Paul and Ivy doing?  Is Paul in school yet?

Hi Larry - Yes Paul is in school and doing exceedingly well. They will be in Phoenix over the holidays so we're excited about that!  Do keep in touch with them - they want to buy a house asap!

Stats are interesting - I watch mine as well and it's intersting to see the patterns.  Good to hear from you!  I appreciate all your help with Ivy and Paul and baby Eden!

Wow thanks again Liz. I'm seeing you all over the rain today.  How nice!

Claude - I wish!  There is alwasy so  much more to learn.  The more I learn the more I realize I don't have a clue!  I"ve been giving AR workshops  here in Phoenix so it's important to be as relevant for our newbies as I can.  And make sense of it for them!  BTW - when you're good you're good!  And I'm good. Ask your wife!!

Thanks for stopping by Lou :)

Everything is just about as clear as mud!  I want to target my community and potential clients but it seems to be successful on Active Rain I really need to connect with the Active Rain community.  Does that make my posts schizophrenic? I visited the business website of an Active Rain blogger.  I was surprised to discover that she has a completely different, more locally focused blog on her website.  It was interesting to me that 1) she keeps two blogs 2) that she uses the two blogs so differently.

Developing my blog strategy was the most difficult part of getting involved here at AR. First it was difficult just figuring out who to target, but then also where to post-My outside blog, localism, members only. The possibilities are almost limitless it seems.

I think I figured it out around 50,000 points, but then it started to morph! I'm sure my focus will evolve with time, but I think it's important to have a narrower focus when you're starting out.

I think the most important thing is to write and to post regularly. You will only get better.

Marian -  being clear as mud is a good place to be - shows that you really want to figure it out and your asking for help!  I'll email you with some more ideas and I'd be happy to share what I've learned so far.

Rich - you got it - limitless for sure.  That is the beauty and fun of the journey.......and consistency is the key as well as quality content.

Excellent points.  It reminds me of taking a vacation trip.  We don't just get in the car and start driving.  We have a destination (goal) in mind and choose a route from where we are to where we want to go.  Hmmm..... we you ever a professional teacher?  Great post.

Anna,  Great ideas for purpose.  I have to clarify mine some more.  I was excited I finally started posting, but love the idea of clarity and call to action.  I can't wait to read the next 4!  Thanks for sharing for us newbie's.  Michelle

Although succeeding with ActiveRain does take time, making use of hyper-local content and long tail keywords can certainly short that time to 30 days or less.

Ken LOL - you know I've been teaching since high school!

Michelle - I wish I would have read something like this when I first started.  It really helpe to map out of plan and get clear ass to the purpose of your blog.

Russel - agreed. Until I took Bob's challenge awhile back I didn't really understand that. Now - it works every time.

Sometimes the "best" advice is the "simplest" advice, thank you for pointing this invaluable information, it is to easy to lose focus in your blogging and lose the audience you are trying to target.

I have been on active rain for about 2 years now but hit a massive blog block and have taken a break.  Now I feel almost like a "newbie" again.

Your series is serving as a good refresher course.
