Create a Blogging Schedule: A 6-Part Series for Newbies (Part 3)

This one is pretty self-explanatory - go figure. But just because it's easy to understand doesn't mean you can overlook its importance! Creating a schedule is one of the best things you can do to be successful at blogging in general, and on ActiveRain, in particular.

  1. Make time to blog. "I tried blogging, but I just don't have time." BANISH THIS EXCUSE. You do have time, if you make time. So make time. I'm not in your head and I don't know what your schedule looks like, so I can't tell you when to make time. I can only tell you, MAKE TIME.

  2. Next, decide how often you will post. My coach advised that when you're first getting started, it's essential to post for 30 straight days in a row. I know this seems like a lot - but go back to the benefits and JUST DO IT. After that, you want to post at least once a week, more if you can. Decide what will work for your schedule, then commit to it and keep your commitment.

  3. Calendar your blogging time. Once it's on your schedule, honor that time just like you would time with a client. Maybe it's Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Weekday evenings after the kids have gone to bed. Saturday afternoons. It doesn't matter when you blog, just that you keep to the schedule.Create a blogging schedule and stick to it!

  4. Write ahead and post later. Maybe you only have a couple hours a week for blogging, but when you're in that groove, you can bang out a few posts at a time. You can save them in "DRAFT" form and then post them later. This obviously won't work for time-sensitive things like statistics, but it will work with many real estate topics.

  5. Once you know your posting schedule, let your readers know what it is so that they can look for your posts. You can add this to the signature and call to action at the end of each post. "Look for the next installment of Real Estate Rita's Riotous Ruminations every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday morning."

  6. One of the most important relationship-building aspects of ActiveRain is the emphasis on commenting on other members' blogs. Make sure you build time for commenting into your blog schedule.

  7. Don't panic if you don't see immediate results. It's important to realize that just like any relationships, your blogging will evolve over time. People seldom get engaged on the first date. First, you see each other at the gym. You notice what time of day it is and you go back. Then you smile and begin talking. One thing leads to another, and a relationship is formed. Blogging is exactly the same. But if you're strategic and committed to your participation in ActiveRain, in as little as 4 to 6 months, you will likely begin to generate leads, referrals, and amazing friendships.

Yes, blogging takes time. But if you can get the scheduling thing down now, all your efforts will pay off faster, bigger, and better than you can imagine. And if you have any questions at all, don't hesitate to ask. That's why we're here. Trust me - I was where you are once. It gets easier and all the myriad returns are so well worth it!

Hey Anna, I'm just getting started with Active Rain.  I never thought about doing blogs on a schedule.  Right now I'm just doing them whenever I think a topic is worthy of blogging.

Hi Anna-  Love your post.  We are new, but very active in AR. We are getting close to 40 days and will be doing a post on that.  This is a quiet time of the year for many, and is a great time to get in there and blog, comment and send e-mail to new Rain friends! --Sara

Jerremy - glad it helped!  See you in the Rain!

Liz - it really helped me to block out some time each week.  I usually write a bunch at one sitting - like this series of 6 for new folks like you.  If I don't block out time - I may not get back as there as so many distractions all day long. Lock yourself in your office!!

Hi I Texas!  You might want to add your name to your signature so everyone knows your name - kind of like the Cheers Bar!  Good for you for sticking with it and using your down time to learn new stuff.  You will be very happy you did as time goes on.  Amazing people in the rain - and so much to learn!

Justin - you're welcome!  I know what's it like to just be starting as I didn't get serious about blogging until the start of 2009.  Just keep at it little by little (ok maybe more than a little!).

Thanks Mama Liz!  You know me - training is one of the things I enjoy - like you!  I like to make it fun, easy to understand and not so darn overwhelming to newbies.  It wasn't that long ago that I was one.

I like point number 5. I kinda have a schedule that I kinda stick to. If I could publish a schedule like you recommend that would be awesome.

I'm going to go check out the other two in you series.

Did I miss something? How long have you been an ambassador?

Let me retract my previous comment about planning a vacation.  Before getting in the car, IT must be ready for the trip.  So this is all prepatory to actually going on the trip.  Gas in the tank, air in the tires, maps, funds.  I guess what I'm saying is that being successful in blogging, or anything else, requires a complete plan, from beginning to end.  Sign me opening the eyes and TAKING THE BLINDERS OFF!!!

Hi AB. I missed parts 1 and 2 but will go back. What a great series for new bloggers.  Wish I had this when I started last year.  I think I had two choices sink or swim lol.  ITexas is actually Sara.  You just missed seeing her name at the end of her comment.

Rich - letting your clients know when you're posting is for those folks who don't post as often as a lot of us do.  IE: every wed etc etc. My folks know I post almost daily so it's differetn.  Let me know what you think of the other ones!  Ambassador - awhile back - Sept maybe?  I don't know - it's just full speed ahead and having a blast!

Ken Ken Ken - don't go to analytical on me!!!!!  Take your foot off the brake at times.  (hey folks I know Ken well!!)

Hey Jenny - Me too - that's why I thought it was a good one to have out there. I base the newbie workshops off this info.  Thanks about ITexas - but I think she should get her name out front so folks know right away who she is.

For those who don't have time to blog, I would remind them of what my wise old grandmother taught me: "You always have time to do the things you do first."

Best wishes!

Yes, I am finding that I am posting blogs late at night and then I realized that I get more hits/comments when I post during the day...so the write-now-post-later thing is key.

Time blocking (or maybe in this case it should be called 'time blogging') is a great way to keep your content fresh. Letting our readers know when the next post is due also adds an element of accountability which should futher motivate us to stay on schedule.

Chris you're welcome. I also just emailed you the series. Hope it helps!

Ladies - time blocking is critical for sure.  2010 here we come!

Lloyd - well I was chatting with Bob S one day and he asked if I'd be interested in being an ambassador.  Basically we enjoy sharing what we've learned along the way with others - so far I've had a blast playing with newbies and oldies and everyone inbetween!  We're not paid or on staff - it's more like an ambassador for a chamber of commerce - except here we play in the rain but don't get wet. LOL

Lane it does seem to make a difference.  More folks are up and busy during the day.  I find that early AZ time works well as it's around 8 or 9 east coast.

Ha ha ha Irene - you a slacker?  I think naught!

John - one more level of accountability - can only help us all!
