"The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. Its been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt, and erased again. But, baseball has marked the time. This field, this game, is a part of our past, Ray. It reminds us of all that once was good, and could be again."Field of Dreams

Terrance Mann, from the movie Field of Dreams

I love a good baseball analogy- and my favorite baseball movie is Field of Dreams. Today I am thinking about office management, so here are some tips straight from the voice from The Field of Dreams...

Build it and they will come - Think of all the preparation that goes into making a field ready for play.  Look around your office- what does it say about you and your company?  Is everything working and in good order?  Does your office say - this is a great and productive place to work? Is the office full of activity or a place to socialize?  How old are your computers? copy machines?  or do you still have typewriters??  Your office decor and appearance needs to create the right first impression.  If your decor and equipment is old and dated, everyone that walks in will think your company is too.  Stage your office like you would stage a listing - everyday is a showing.

Ease their pain - Yes, today's market is full of pain for your agents and their clients.  Like it or not, a big part of your job is to listen to the pain and then make it better.  I think the coaching part of the job is sometimes lost in the listening.  Especially in today's challenging market your agents and their clients are looking for your guidance and solutions.  Are you working with your agents on their business plan?  Are you helping them with pricing?  Prospecting?  Objection handling?

Go the Distance - Office management is a marathon and not a sprint, even when the hectic days leave you breathless.  How many new initiatives have you launched?  Make sure your day to day activities don't overtake your vision of leadership.  There is no relief pitcher in management, you need to make sure you save enough good stuff for extra innings.

Some other great baseball quotes...

There is no crying in baseball -  Tom Hanks in A League of Their Own

Baseball is the only field of endeavor where a man can succeed three times out of ten and be considered a good performer.  ~Ted Williams

That's baseball, and it's my game.  Y' know, you take your worries to the game, and you leave 'em there.  You yell like crazy for your guys.  It's good for your lungs, gives you a lift, and nobody calls the cops.  Pretty girls, lots of 'em.  ~Humphrey Bogart

Things could be worse.  Suppose your errors were counted and published every day, like those of a baseball player.  ~Author Unknown

Progress always involves risks.  You can't steal second base and keep your foot on first.  ~Frederick B. Wilcox

So, go into your office, put on your game face, ready your field and get into the game!

I like it.  My kids play baseball and the more I see them play, the more I see how the game is a reflection of so many things in life.  I seem to pick up something new to improve my business or people skills everytime I watch one of their games.

Beth... I love analogies and you mentioned a few good ones. And I could agree with much of what you had to mention.

I like baseball, but football is my favorite. Baseball is slow, but you can go to a game and actually relax and have a conversation. And I enjoyed your quotes.  The errors quote is a great one. If you think about it, it's so true. Would you like it?  Maybe by doing this, it would make others aware of those that aren't worthy in this business. If they have tons of errors.   hhhhhmmmm    Nice job.

Very cool post, Beth. That is one of my favorite movies, too (well, any baseball movie is) and you've done a great job of tying it to our lives. Thanks for sharing!

Love your post and I sure loved the movie "Field of Dreams."  Besides baseball, the movie shows the spirit and belief of one man and his family.  Going against the odds. . .  Facing challenges and losses. . .  And somehow still moving forward and coming out ok in the end.  Thanks for the post!

Cynthia - I agree - sometimes don't we all feel like we might be on to something good when everyone else doubts you?  It's that thought that prompted the post actually... today was one of those days that had more questions than answers.

Great post Beth- I am a baseball fan myself, and tend to remind myself daily "there is no crying in baseball" or "there is no crying in recruiting!" Especially since the stats are similiar, succeed 3 out of 10 times and be a good performer.

Beth...Great points made.  It is both a pleasure and an honor for me to work for you! I have never been happier! What do they say .. if you love what you do you never work a day in your life!
I have the best office( & most beautiful!), best associates, in the best community! I really believe this and want to share this great environment with everyone worthy of it! So it is really easy to develop the right team .
We are "the right choice".

Hmm, you sound like you had a lot of your plate.

I don't know much about Baseball being a Brit, it seems a bit "slow" to watch on tv not really understanding...I am trying to teach my 4 year old T-ball and was just given tickets to a game. (It will be our first, so I am excited for the live deal). Baseball is part of the American culture I am looking forward to better understand it.

And Caroline - you know what my plate looks like.  Baseball is an acquired taste -the slowness of it is one of the best things about it.  It's nice to be outside and have time to chat with those around you- it's a very social sport.  Enjoy!

Beth, Great post! I am a believer in the "Field of Dreams".  Never very good at baseball, but once coached and all girls team with no experience.  In today's world, we all need to be heavy hitters.  JoAnn

Great post Beth.  I am going to link to it in my blog, if you don't mind.  I really enjoyed "Built it and they will come."  I've stressed this to my people so much; I believe in it...the way that Kevin Costner did.  You've got to prepare that office!

Beth, the bases are empty for now, however in just 4 1/2 months they will start to fill up again. Got your link from Karen Georges post. I love the fact that there are women out there that love the game as much as I do. My wife is not one of them. Go figure.

I couldn't resist commenting on this one ...  I am a "baseball dad". I wasn't always a baseball dad, but evolved into one as both of my sons went on to play baseball in college. Over the years, I developed a supreme appreciation for the game. The intricasies and complexities of the game increase with each subsequent level, and I find that baseball really is a great metaphor for business and for life.

Consider this ... the superstars in baseball don't hit a homerun every time they step up to the plate. The homeruns are nice, they are certainly valuable, but the player who reaches base safely 3 times out of 10 with consistency, will earn more money in a year than most people will earn in a lifetime. Same thing in this business. The person that is able to successfully get the job done CONSISTENTLY, even if it is only 3 times out of 10 will have all the money they want or need. (They will just have to increase the number of "plate appearances.")  Most of us would think that failing 7 times out of 10 would be disastrous or even pathetic. The KEY is how many times do we step up to the plate!

I went to an empty baseball park one afternoon to just simply feel the grass move under my bare feet and between my toes.  It was a quiet and peaceful afternoon.  I walked around the diamond and walked in the outfield; I even walked around outside the fence and around the ball park just thinking and contemplating about my life.  Then after awhile this still, small voice said to me... "Well?... are you going to get in the game or are you going to sit on the sidelines and watch?"  "Are you going to be a player or a watcher?"

I suspect a lot of people have trouble just getting in the game.  It's not as easy as it looks!  It takes a lot of work!
