Weather and growing season are two big questions Maine real estate buyers ask when emailing, calling maine aerial farm imageor actually visiting our office at 69 North Street in Houlton ME.

For weather if they are from out of state, never been here but have misinformation, we send this this video. For an overview of New England that has a 120 to 180 day growing season, this website hits the highlights, generalities.

The Maine Agricultural Site helps point out the popular Maine food stand / farmer's markets vegetables in demand, and the time you need to create them either from seed or as transplants to speed the process up. The state of Maine has many valuable resources in how to start a farmer's market.

Blight is always a problem in Maine's growing season too. Scope out this site too for everything from Maine Farmland Trust to Maine Organic Farming information. Certain soils are better suited for trees, others for row crops. If the land has lots of ledge, hard rock out croppings, then okay for cattle to graze, raising horses or small animals.

But other than haying and pasturing if there is lots of ledge or even rocks poking thru in lots of place, it's like an iceberg. Looks innocent enough from the terrain view, but the real tale is below the ground.

Early Maine history and needs were pretty simple. Farming is not all glamorous..hard work as this Maine potato picking digger / youth crew video demonstrates. Also double covered low tunnels can extend the season on the truck gardens, the people who supply the farmer's markets too.

Hi Andrew, My husband and I were in Caribou and Presque Isle a few years ago so we know the major crop in that area is potatoes (or is it potatos).  We also spent some time in wonderful Bar Harbor aka "Bah Haba".  What a fun trip!

Did not eat much rice growing up on the Maine potato farm in the picture. Taters, spuds are king..but broccoli, grains, and we even grew sugar beets, dry beans to bake...I'm getting hungry this close to lunch. Thanks for popping your head in Shirley. Lobstah? Some Maine blueberry pieand would you like that heated a little with a ball of vanila ice cream on top?

Hi Andrew - I followed our family tree back in to Garland Maine in the early 1800's, and those farmers sure had a challenging time of it. Today, that life somehow seems like it would be simpler...

Farming is not all glamorous..but you are fed, have food on the table, a roof over your head, lots of love from three generations living under that one roof!
