I'm a Realtor in NW Tucson and a huge animal lover.  I currently volunteer with Arizona Greyhound Rescue.  I have one of my own and a foster dog now.  I'm on horse property, so I'm thinking about a rescue shelter for the pets left behind in the foreclosures.

I have NO IDEA how to even start researching such a project!  If there is anyone out there that can help, please contact me!  I would think that I would need to set up a non profit and start begging for donations for kennels, food, meds, etc.  Help!  I need guidance!!

Bandit...he's a lover and available for adoption!

I have a friend that is into dog rescue.  She usually fosters one or two.  She does this with a friend of hers.......I will try to get more details about what they do.

Dawn, I love your idea.  I'm an animal lover too.  It breaks my heart when a dog or cat gets left behind due to foreclosure or when the family up and moves away.  I'd say contact your animal shelter for how to set up your own shelter and then network with other animal lovers to get the non profit started.  If you can hook up with your mayor or someone of influence to do fund raisers, it might be easy to get your cash flow flowing.  Good luck!

Oh and keep blogging about it to the public in your area!

Dawn:  I'm sorry, but that "animal" looks much more like a pony than a dog.  And you, who look quite petite from your picture... did you every try and ride him ?

Dawn, perhaps a website to connect people looking for a pet with the pets that have been left.  Then you are right, you will have to solicit money, food, blankets and other supplies, but most of all you will need volunteers to walk and feed the animals you take in.  Best of luck in your endeavor.

Thanks Sandra...

Karen Anne, Bandit is less than half of me!  But he does need to gain a few pounds...he's still too skinny.  I sat down to put on my shoes this morning and he climbed on my lap and put his head over my shoulder!  It will be hard to say goodbye when he gets adopted!

Dawn:  If Bandit had done that to me... I don't see how I could ever, ever say goodbye to him.  He sounds like he is more "aware" than most humans.

Dawn, your research might start with other rescue organizations.  I'm sure they would be glad to offer their help.  A good one is BadRap at www.badrap.org, a pit bull rescue group in the San Francisco Bay area.  This is an ambitious endeavor, so start small.  Every little bit helps.  And best of luck.
