Deciding What to Write: A 6-Part Series for Newbies (Part 4)

One of the first concerns on every new blogger's mind is: What should I write? I can answer that in 4 simple words:

WRITE WHAT YOU KNOW.

Writing instructors from grammar school English teachers to Masters level university professors have been advocating this forever. The reason is that it's very, very good advice. Write what you know. What if you're new to the real estate industry and don't yet feel all that adept at any particular subject? Then write what you want to know. As you research and learn and master the material - whether it's all the hyperlocal details of your farm community or every aspect of home staging from A to Z - share what you learn. No one has to know it's new to you - and in the process, you become known as an expert!

Write what you know!

Don't worry about whether you're a good enough writer, smart enough, accomplished enough, knowledgeable enough, etc. JUST DO IT! Like riding a bike, it will come back to you ... and like any other skill, the more you do it, the easier it will become. Honestly, the more you blog, the more ideas you will have for things to blog about.

In general, I advocate following the 80/20 rule. Make 80 percent of your blog posts about some aspect of real estate; then, use the other 20 percent for non-real estate topics that would be of general interest to your fellow ActiveRain members.

One note: do NOT get hung up on the fact that other people are writing about the same topics. You are a unique individual, so you're naturally going to have your own way of seeing the world and reporting on it. Sure, there are tons of posts about curb appeal - does that mean you shouldn't write another one? DEFINITELY NOT! Simply because you're a different person, you will have a perspective that makes your post unique.

And the more unique the better. Trade on your strengths. Find your voice, your  brand, and stick to it! You might be funny, serious, research-oriented, irreverent, intellectual, spiritual, political, etc. There's no wrong or right - except that you be respectful of other people's views, even if they differ from yours.

Ideas for Kinds of Posts

Here are a few ideas for the kinds of posts you can write.

  • Instructional posts (how to do anything, from work with a challenging client to host an open house)
  • Informational posts (This will likely be the majority of your posts, at least as you are getting started.)
  • Reviews (industry-related books, products, etc. Don't feel the need to do this all alone - ask for others' opinions!)
  • Lists (David Letterman made the Top 10 List an American cultural icon - create your own lists.)
  • Interviews (celebrities, industry professionals, etc.)
  • Case studies (Chronicle the things that happen in your day - especially the funny things or challenges, as others are likely facing similar difficulties.)
  • Profiles of local individuals or businesses
  • Links (Make a list of useful links and share it.)
  • Contrasting opinions (Get another person to take the opposite side in a debate or discussion - just remember to keep it civil.)
  • Comparisons (Compare Service A to Service B in a single industry.)
  • Rants (Take on issues about which you are passionate that will cause controversy and lead to discussion. Don't fear controversy - but be ready to stand your ground if/when you touch a nerve for someone who disagrees with you.)
  • Inspiration (What inspires you? Share quotes, stories, etc.)
  • Research (products, topics, industry perspectives - share what you learn)
  • Predictions of the future, or reviews of how past predictions held up (especially good as we come up on the end of the year)
  • Critiques (Yes, you can critique/review almost anything, but remember to take the high road!)
  • Hypothetical (These "What if?" scenarios can be wonderfully amusing, or serious and professional.)

I've said it before and I'm going to keep on saying it until I know in my heart you're really listening: Just DO it! All of it. But start by blogging on ActiveRain. And if you have any questions at all, I'm here to answer them. Remember, utilize your respources!

Anna,

Great advice! It's hard sometimes to get inspiration. But if you just write what you know, I think that makes it much easier! I love all your tips. I learn something every day! Thanks for taking the time to share this with us.

Excellent info Anna.  I did struggle with blogging "redundant" topics, but then realized that if I develop a reader base, they may be missing information that would be beneficial to them if I decided against posting it because I felt everyone else in the world already did...  Your readers may not be reading much more than your blog, so you may be their main source of information...

Thanks for stopping by Edward!

Deb - it's my favorite saying.  Just Do It!  Quit whining and complaing and get r done!  I'll send you a post I wrote all about that very thing!

Donna or Larry - just keep writing and it will happen.  Sometime I don't have a clue as to what I'm going to post but I just get started and out it pops!

Thanks Debi!  We need to plan that trip to the Netherlands :)

You bet Ms Carra - you're welcome!  AR is such a great format for everybody to learn new stuff. I'm so glad you on board!

Chanda - that's what happens to a lot of writers.  Just because we see something a gazillion times already doens't mean our 'subscribers' have.  And they are the most important ones, now aren't they!

Be the Source!

Hi Anna,

You are right that we end up researching a subject that we are writing about.  We always learn something new.  I find just by reading others posts ideas often form for a post of my own.  Especially if I comment and the comment gets rather longish.  I usually head over and do a post from my comment.  Great series.

I have had some people tell me that they were going to write about ABC, but then they saw that Paul McCartney had a Featured Post about ABC, so they didn't. They didn't realize that they could still write a post about ABC for their San Diego service area since Paul McCartney's service area was in New York. Heck, they could even have reblogged Paul's Featured post and included an introduction saying something like, "This is a great post by Paul McCartney over in New York. It's content is relevant to use here in San Diego, too."

Best wishes!

Right on Russell.  It takes folks awhile it seems to remember they are writing for their subscribers who most likely haven't read anything else. I reblog on occasion if it its a good fit for my folks.  Thanks for stopping by and reading all of this series.  You are one heck of a great guy who knows his stuff!!

Anna, where do you get all the photos graphics that you use in your posts?  I've been searching for "free stock photos" but not finding great stuff.  Is there a better place?

Anna, just discovered your series by reading the last one first.  Love it and what gret suggestions.  I was a lurker here in the rain for a long time before I got up the courage to start writing.  Wish I had you prodding me to JUST DO IT!  I'm still struggling with it, but it's encouraging to know that as you go along it does get alittle easier.

Hi Anna, I just found your blog and really appreciate the no nonsense approach to it. I AM new to the industry so, like others, think I've got little to contribute at this time. So, I thought I'd simply start a blog basically entitled "things I've learned so far" or something along that line. Then i would share what I've learned as I go whether it's about inspections, staging, vacation homes, etc...How does that sound? Thank you for the your wisdom!
