Veteran's Day is a day to loudly and proudly honor all of those who have bravely served our great country

This year, while we're remembering all of those who have served in the past, let's also do something to support our current active military.

Don't have any ideas of what you could do?  Well, here are just a few to get you started:

  1. Send a letter or care package.  There are several Child Saluting American Flag by respres on Flickr.comwebsites that you can check out to get you the right information for this.  You can check out www.anysoldier.com, www.letterstosoldiers.org, and www.amillionthanks.org.

  2. Donate blood for troops in combat.  There are blood banks and blood drives all over the country on an given day.  Your blood may stay within your community, or it could be the life-saving nectar for someone protecting your freedom.  You can check out www.militaryblood.dod.mil for more info.

  3. Offer up your unused frequent flyer miles at www.homemiles.org.  This could not only get a soldier home for a little much needed R & R, but it could save us (taxpayers) a little dough, too.

  4. Volunteer to foster a military personnel's pet through www.netpets.org/militarypet/foster.php.  So many of their beloved pet end up in shelters because they are leaving the country and can't take them along.  How awesome would it be for them if someone could take care of their pet while they're away, and then when they return, their pet is waiting for them!  I'm certain that's one of the best welcome-home gifts -- especially if their animals are their family!

  5. Donate sports equipment, games and more to the troops through www.give2thetroops.org.  They do have some down-time, and while it isn't much, I'm sure it would be really nice to get a taste of home by being able to get a flag-football or basketball game going.

And don't forget to say THANK YOU to all past and active military this Veteran's Day (and after)!

This is a great post with actually TANGIBLE things we can do to say THANK YOU for everything the troops do for us.  Thank you for putting it together and I will re-blog to allow my clients to read what they too can do to help.

All good ideas, and some that I had never even heard of... like donating your mileage. Or that we might volunteer to take care of a pet. Thank you for your thoughts and your reminder!

Laxson Associates: These are excellent things we can do to showour troops how thankful we are for the sacrifices they are making for us.  Thanks for reblogging and getting this information in front of more people.

Ruth: The mileage one was something that I've just recently learned about.  The pet one is prominent here since we have an air base and shelters who are full to capacity because of the unfortunate circumstances that have arisen.

I'm so glad this got featured!  These are wonderful ideas and I had no idea they could use Sports Equipment which my garage is filled with.  I love the ideas and would be more then happy to help any way I can to show our support and appreciation.

I have sent care packages and once a month I send $25.00 for a phone card so he or she can call home. This past Sunday we entered into the Wounded Warriors Run that was held in Lindenhurst, NY. It's an expensive run but it's well worth it! Great post by the way! :)

Hi Jim and Maria -- I spent 2.5 years at the Charleston Navy Base on a ship so I am always humbled by the veterans who have given their sacrifice and lives to support the freedom we ALL enjoy!

Great post and Re-Blogging... Trust me... this time of year through Super Bowl is really, really tough when you are 19 years old (or any age for that matter) and a couple of thousand miles away from friends and family.....

Probably even more so this Holiday Season.

Jim and Maria, thanks for this post.  Indeed, there is so much that the citizens can do to support veterans and men and women in uniform.  If you are close to a base, contact Family Services, Family Support Center, Airman & Family Readiness Center, you may volunteer or contribute.  The Blue Star Mom does a lot, for the troops, people can volunteer.  On a sad note, 33% of homeless in the USA are veterans.  We must change this.

Happy Veterans' Day

Thanks for the great suggestions on how we can thank the current members of our armed forces and future veterans. Let's not forget that we can do these things all year long, not just on Veterans' Day.

I think that we all take for granted the huge sacrifice that these service people make for us and our country. Hats off to you for giving ideas to others as to how we can help.

WOW!  I love it!  This is an awesome post chock full of awesome ideas of how to say thank you in so many ways.  I have a broker friend who voluntarily went back to Iraq last year to serve another tour of duty.  His wife and three boys stayed behind and she ran their brokerage.  I emailed him regularly with news from home and words of thanks and encouragement.  When he returned he had several of us who had supported him and his family during his service stand and be recognized at a town hall meeting for agents and brokers and I was totally stunned.  I never realized how much those messages from home meant to him and made a difference.  It was truly a humbling moment.

I just got back to my office from the Veteran's Day parade and speeches at the courthouse here in Lebanon, TN. I'm ashamed to admit it, but this is the first time I've been to one; not intentionally, just one of those "Oh, darn, I forgot".  I'll not make that mistake again.

A great way to support our troops is by adding this address to your Christmas card list & ask others to do the same.  Your thoughts are very much appreciated.  Thank you.
