Berlin WallOn TV here in the US and everywhere in the world they mentioned the 20-year anniversary of the demolition of the Berlin Wall.

What is the end of Berlin Wall for us? The proof that people can win. Win the collossul evil empire, win the fear... That makes it symbolic.

The end of Cold War, the beginning of the unknown... Those who were behind the Iron Curtain will always remember Reagan's "Tear this wall, Mr. Gorbachev". These heretic words were coming from the heart, and proved to be so powerful... Reagan was not a President when we came to US, but it was because of him that we were able to come, it was because of people like Reagan, that world started changing

Every leader of the Western World attended the symbolic event, former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev, Polish leader of Solidarnost Leh Valensa...

Who's missing? The leader of the free world? Surprise, surprise. Of course, he has more important stuff to do. Lobbying for the Olympics was, obviously, a more important event on the president's schedule

But he sent a recorded message... What a relief

Jon,  Like you I am so thankful that our leader sent a recording.  Actually,  I think the event was lucky he was not there with some of his brilliant comments.  he probably would have said that we were better off with the wall.  Oh well.  Anyway, I enjoy your posts -- thanks for sharing them.  I did a post on the wall if you would like to read it: Memories of the Berlin Wall - I Was Held at Gun Point!

Jon,

It always amazes me that you understand so much better than so many native born Americans!

Simper Fi!

Hi Jon!  You are so inspiring to me--to know that you can see so much that many American born citizens can't is so refreshing!  Right now, I'm concerned about the wall that he's building here in the US--I smell socialism on the horizon and that is VERY scary.

Bill -- I am no smarter, I simply have a dubious "advantage" of being born behind the the Iron Curtain, and while, like others, I was afraid to talk about it, I still thought about it. It was not considered wise to think about it. I wasn't wise

I find it almost bizarre that the President wasn't there. Seems like he is always jetsetting somewhere.  Why miss this event?

Kevin - it is the most strange thing. Some agree that it was good that he did not go there, and some are surprised that he did not go there, so one can think that they are in disagreement, but actually not. You just do not trust that he does not say something that would make us cringe.

Jon, Katerina also wrote a touching post on the Berlin Wall and I watched Reagan's speech again and it brought it all back. It's probably best he didn't go - what meaningful contribution could he possibly have? He is all about taking away freedom, not giving it.

Sharon - what a coincidence. I stumbled o n katerina;s blog, read it, listened to Reagan, watched the  other vieo, read the  comments, and saw your comment there. I left a comment for Katerina, and came back, and here you are, and mentioning Katerina.

She wrote an absolutely wonderful blog

Rob - as Sharon notes, even if he goes, would  he be on the side of Reagan?

Your perspective is so interesting Jon!  It is sad that the anniversary of this event came and went, with barely a peep.
