Well, with the final countdown to our big moving date and a 17 hour drive looming in-front of me, I have to start thinking of putting together my official "Driving Tunes CD". Trouble is, I am the type of person that when I hear a song I love it, know all the words and sing along but 10 seconds later I have no idea what the name of the song was.

There are just some songs that are perfect for those long summer drives, you know the ones that you have to turn up, ditch the A/C to have the wind whip through your hair and cruise with the open road ahead of you. Help me build my list and create the perfect CD for my really long drive.

This is my list so far (keep in mind it might not be the actual song name, just some of the lyrics):

Sweet Home Alabama, Copperhead Road, Big league, I Drove all Night, Where the Streets have No Name, Signs, Pour Some Sugar on Me, Sweet Child O'Mine.

What is your favourite driving tune?

LOL I'm a young one, but I can name a few.  I'm a music major, so this may get a little freaky

Devil in Disguise by Elvis

Don't Phunk With My Heart by Black Eyed Peas

Here I Come by Fergie

Pour Some Sugar on Me is also one of my favorites....

Roll Me Away by Bob Segar

Pink Houses by John Mellencamp

Sabre and Spurs composed by John Philip Sousa

I can't think of any more right at the moment, but if I do, I will come back.

My husband has a little Mazda Miata and loves to blast this as he hits the hwy with the top down!

Another option that I love when I need to make the time move a little faster is to get a book on CD  -- a good love story or murder mystery can make the time fly by!

Black Water by the Doobie Brothers

I like Magic Carpet Ride by Steppanwolf but my foot is heavy and that usually gets me in trouble with that song

Another idea for you.... get some books on tape or cd. We've done that on a lot of drives and it really helps pass the time. Its really fun if you get a book you like. Kind of hangs in suspense, you hurry through your rest stops to get back in the car so you can finish the book etc...

We usually check out the books on cd from the library. But since your moving you might have difficulty returning them. So - not sure if they have Cracker Barrel's where you are driving - but at Cracker Barrel you can buy a book on cd (for about $30), listen to it, and return it (at any other cracker barrel location) and get all your money back except ($3 or $4). Its kind of a rental, except they cover themselves if you don't return it. Great thing if you have a Cracker Barrel near your starting point you pick one up and then drop it off at the ending point.

Otherwise maybe look at downloading some books or just going the traditional way and buying or borrowing.

Hope you have a good road trip!

For long trips, I too like audio books.  Once when driving to Nebraska I was listening to The Bridges of Madison County.  Just as it got to the part where he drives out of town, and I was of course sobbing, I came to the Winterset Iowa exit.  I just had to get off and see for myself.  Other than that, my music choice is the Dixie Chicks latest CD, in addition to XM radio's soul station and of course the 60's channel on XM.

Terry Haugen - STAGE it RIGHT!

If my husband is driving it's usually any Jimmy Buffet he has.  I'm not big into music but I love, love, love Jack Johnson - brings back fond memories of sitting at the beach in Del Mar, consuming a cocktail and watching the sunset.  Not that he sings about that, but that's the music I listened to a lot when I lived there.

My grandson and I love Bruce Springsteen's version of "Viva Las Vegas!" so we always have Bruce in the car.  And I've never even been to Vegas unless I'm passing thru to somewhere else.  My 9 year old grandson always promises he will take me there some day ;-)

And I always have some Van Morrison in the van along with U2, Sting and Ottmar Liebert wherever I go...

Someone else mentioned John Mellencamp, also good driving music.  Nice to have a variety with you depending upon the landscape and time of day...

Lucy, I have thoroughly enjoyed your adventure in the selling and buying process and now moving. Genius and I thank you for it...we get the experience without the headache and heavy moving...love it!

Now for my song of choice...how about Cruising on a Sunday afternoon by Smokey Robinson and then a little ditty "You better be good to me" by Tina Turner.

Hi Lucie, a 17 hour drive? Wow! When I used to drive to Vermont from Montreal for weekend camping trips, I'd take along stuff like any of the classic albums by Pink Floyd or Led Zeppelin. Aside from being great music, the time just flew by. Later...

My husband bought a motorcycle last year. On the first few road trips I had to listen to him singing to Garth Brooks, Toby Keith, Alan Jackson etc as he had an Ipod and I didn't! Now I have my own and the time goes by a lot faster - I like to have it on random and I jump around between Josh Groban, Michael Buble, The Carpenters and the Gypsy Kings to name but a few.
