Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grade Salesman?

By
Real Estate Agent with RE/MAX Advantage

I had to share some funny sales tips that I learned from my fifth-grader this past weekend. My son, Bryce, is ten years old and plays hockey. His team had an event this weekend where they got to sell programs at the Colorado College hockey game as a fundraiser. I was unable to attend, so I sent him with another family.

All of the players on his team walked around for the first period of the game and the goal was to sell as many programs as you can.

When my son got home that night I asked him if he was able to sell anything. He replied, "Oh Yeah, a ton!" I later received an email from the team mangager saying that the organization that we were selling for was very pleased at the amount of programs sold and that Bryce was "the winner" for most programs sold.

I was curious so I inquired to my son about how he was able to sell so many programs. He went into an elaborate explanation of his "Strategy" (as he called it):

  • The first thing he said that he did was watch the people coming in the door and he picked out certain people to ask. He said they had to be couples or women (I guess no grumpy old men)Ha! This was his form of pre-qualifying.

  • Then, he said that he would ask them to buy a program and they would almost always say NO.

  • This next part is what gets me- He said he would wait for the NO, then he would tell them that the price has been reduced on the programs and show them what is inside (value-adding!).

  • If they still were not convinced, he would explain how part of the money would go to help his hockey team.

  • He told me "Mom, I just joked around with them a lot and made friends" (building relationships).

I am not sure how many he sold, but when I asked if he made anyone mad, he said, "Nope, they all bought with a happy face."

He wants to be a vet, but I think he might have a future in sales. :)

Is ten too young to put a kid to work selling houses?

What a cool kid you have! And to answer your question, my Mom had us working in her business at an early age, so I say put him to work!

Maybe he'll go into veterinary supply sales. Win-win! I think child labor laws only apply after age 16, so you might be okay. Ask your attorney, though. LOL
