I have been following this Lake Tahoe wildfire near Meyers, CA for days. Having grown up within miles of the area this is a situation that really hits home. I loved living in the mountains, loved the smell of pine, the cool crisp morning air, the peaceful quiet times watching the squirrel's and the blue-jays play. But, everyday you lived in fear that a fast moving wildfire would devour your home.

This fire started Sunday afternoon. Some 2,000 people have been evacuated, over 275 structures including 178 homes lost (one of a friend), it has charred approximately 3,100 acres and is still growing and threatening more homes. Containment is not expected until July 3rd, if all goes as anticipated.

With that being said the California Department of Insurance issued a warning to all California homeowners...you better have inventory of your personal belongings. How should this be done? The best way is to have a video of your belongings or pictures and a detailed inventory of all your personal items with the estimated value.  The Commissioner also expressed that for those of you who have had damage to your home to protect yourself even further and investigate contractors before you hire them!

You can call or e-mail me for a free home inventory guide, or you can click here to visit the state's website and download one now. You can also call the Department of Insurance by calling (800) 927-HELP. I have many other helpful free reports for you available on the Executive Properties website, just click here!

Have a great day and let's keep those families and firefighters in our prayers! And please. remember to have a SAFE 4th of July holiday!

Debbie - great advice. Jack & I lost everything in a house fire on Christmas say 20 years ago - it's important to be prepared.

Joan-You're welcome!

Cyndee-Double whammy a fire and on Christmas...I couldn't imagine. I always live with the fear of fire but so far I have been spared. Just found out today that the house my cousin's daughter was buying (in escrow) burnt to the ground in Tahoe. Poor thing she was looking forward to owning her 1st house! I told them to be thankful they hadn't moved in yet!
