  1. seoI responded to a post today and wrote possibly the longest comment I've ever written before so I figured heck, might as well turn it into my own post.  Instead of just wasting it or under-utilizing the information.

Michele my blog is mainly focused on Search Engine and website oriented content.  I hope you can find something useful I've got over 13 SEO posts right now and add more all the time.  http://activerain.com/blogs/overlandpark/tags/seo

If you have a specific topic or questions, send me an e-mail and I'll try and get a post thrown up for you.

  • I wonder if it is better to find a niche and work hard establishing great , steady content to blog and web pages or is building linking better ?

It depends on how you would like to be found.  My A.R blog is a mis-mash of tons of different content pulling in all kinds of people.  All depends on how you like to play the game.

  •  Is RSS important and well, what does it actually do ?

RSS stands for (Really Simple Syndication), its extremely important in todays blog driven world.  On all the websites I create I make sure I've got a blog on the site somewhere now, because it really helps for Search Engine crawlablility as well as allows people to read your content without having to visit your website.

  •  Is Google really king and is it worth worrying so much about anymore?

Yes Google semi-sadly really is king, I've got a picture in my SEO group of this years COMScore break down and Google has 46-52% of the market share.

  • I feel like I am covering the basics and getting an audience- at least good hits BUT what is it that makes them stick, and come back ?

Constant content, make sure and start writing articles ahead of time.  If you don't have daily article or updates try and at least make sure you've got every other day or so.  Its a really good idea to write articles in draft mode and just store them up when you've got time to write so in times when you don't you can easily get a well written post up.

  • How often should I freshen up website content ?

Uhhh, stated in the previous question ;-)

  • Is it ok to blog on ActiveRain but also post it elsewhere or is that double dipping and a no-no?

Is it ok? I would suggest it more as a must.  If you don't have multiple avenues for pushing out your name its a good idea to not bother at all :-P  Kind of like Robert G Allen's idea of "Multiple Streams of Income".  Always have multiple blogs at the same time.  Even if you have to post an article on one blog and then re-syndicate it onto your other blogs just make sure you link to the original article.

I have a couple of questions here.

If google is the king (can there be doubt) would it be better to go after Yahoo and be a big fish in a smaller pond? If so how?

Hi there...good post..  If you don't mind me asking, how sure are you about the duplicate posting of blogs...I've heard several people say that this is NOT a good thing to do?

I've also heard that it's cool as long as you change the first paragraph so that it's not 100% the same as the post that you put, say here on AR?

I would love to hear your opinion.

Bob - Great question!!!  I love it :-P  Mainly because all these great and all mighty SEO and Web Design nerds on here koodoos to them for speaking what they have read... ;-)

However, everyone knows we Real Estate folk like FACTS AND FIGURES!!!  So instead of B.Sing everyone and trying to pretend like I know what I'm talking about I went ahead and tested it...

Basically what the charts below are saying is DUPLICATE CONTENT IS BULL SHEEP! If done correctly, if you copy an article IN FULL and link back or "source" back to the extact article IN FULL...  You'll actually get SE love because you'll then be seen as a news source.  My blog http://www.moneyvsdebt.com is a huge mishmash of all kinds of stuff from Real Estate to Humor.

My goal this month has been to try and keep constant content on it even if I didn't write it.  As long as they were well written informative articles.

Jim -Yahoo would be awesome to optimize for, however it only works if you have usually anywhere from 4-6 MONTHS!!!  To wait for results.  The good thing about Google and what has made them so powerful and loved by Search Engine Marketers or SEMs.  Is how fast they update.

Just the other day I did another test with some site :-P  Keeping it secret till I publish an article about it.  I changed a view words on some of my links and moved from 3rd place for a keyword I was targeting to 5th place.  I was testing the strength of a couple links as well as on site optimization.  Google UPDATED IT WITHIN HOURS!!!  Yahoo didn't even have time to register the change :-P

Another thing to look at is audience, there have been physiological studies and business marketing studies done on SEO Members Only forums that showed the differences in Google, Yahoo and MSN.

They found Google is a mishmash of many audiences mostly school or research oriented.  Yahoo is basically the dominate female search engine, used for products such as jewelry and social or chat products as well.  Whatever your typical Teenage female might search for, due to their HUGE e-mail audience and chat/message boards.  MSN is the business search engine, you might think male oriented, but it was actually mainly business professionals.  Mostly degree holding business (PEOPLE), use for stock reports, press release information and the likes.

Jordan, thanks for your answers to my question, which begs another. How to optimize for MSN?

Also, thanks for your answer to Bob. Makes a lot of sense.

This is great information.  I especially like the part about storing up the drafts until you have time to finish!!  GOOD STUFF!!   I would like to know how to optimize for MSN and Yahoo.  I would like to be well rounded but it seems the better my blog and website show on Google, it continues to drop on the other two.  Any suggestions?

How often should I freshen up website content ?

As often as possible, but RSS feeds don't really make any difference in my experience. I have over 80 websites and the case where fresh content DOES make a difference is to rewrite the text of the index file, the homepage.

I've never notice any increase of crawlability or traffic with adding of new pages.

I've never noticed any improvement by publishing articles I didn't write myself.

Articles publishing is dead in my opinion, I have a site with nearly 5000 articles and it gets less traffic than an original site with 10 pages!
