After Effects of A Hurricane

Here in Western North Carolina we are miles from any coast. Being a wide state we feel secure and insulated from all of the bad weather that others experience. But what people don't realize is that we really are effected by storms and hurricanes from the Gulf Coast.

For the last several days we have seen heavy rains and flooding from the Gulf Coast Storm aftermath. Hendersonville has experienced flooing and downed trees the last few days, which comes with power outages and road blocks.

We are seeing water sitting in crop fields and county parks.

There have been reports on the news about mud slides in the mountain communities north and west of us. This can result in serious injuries and homes being destroyed. Not too long ago Interstate 40 near the Tennessee border experienced a mud slide and the DOT is still woring on getting it passable while there are long detours.

The importance of this information is for people moving to this area to understand the hazards of living in the mountains. When heavy rains like this come, and they usually do at least once a year, one needs to understand what can happen. Tree roots get waterlogged and can then fall, with or without heavy winds.

For those who come here looking for Big Mountain Views and Wilderness, keep in mind that those grand views come with a price. Bad and often trecherous roads, homes built too close to a large drop, or even hanging off of the side of a mountain can effect the homes below as much as those homes themselves.

Years ago the locals knew better. They saw the dangers and had plenty of room to set back the homes from those precarious drops. With land being scooped up and more homes being built, that set back becomes more scarce.

Beware when you come to look at homes, and if you really need that long range view, make sure that you understand the dangers and check a home out to be assured it is safe from mudslides.

This is in no way meant to scare people from coming to the mountains. Quite the opposite, it is to make you aware of the dangers so that you can get the safest home or vacation possible.

If you are looking at a vacation here soon, be sure to check out the weather. This storm should pass soon and the water is finally receeding. Hopefully the sun will be back by tomorrow.

Happy Traveling.

It looks like your area received more rain and certainly more problems with this storm than those of us on the SE coast of NC. Our concern was saturated ground would allow trees to fall with heavy winds. The winds did NOT come around.
