Success is a term that takes on varied meanings to different individuals. Some categorize and compartmentalize success into their personal lives and business.  Others believe they are all encompassing and intertwined. They believe in balance and harmony in all areas of their lives.

I believe all success revolves around two major premises: Knowing what you want and making a full committment.  It's no secret but many fail to identify what they want  whether it's in a personal relationship or a business.  You can't make a commitment or work toward a goal unless you know what you want!

Good advice Dorie and the timing is perfect.  The challenging 2009 housing market is almost over and now it is time to focus on what we want and how we intend to get it for 2010. Having a plan for success is always a good idea.

Very good points, Dorie.  Knowing what you want can sometimes be hard to figure out but it is vital to do the next steps to get the job done.

Two great attributes that are definitely needed to accomplish just about anything.

Great inspiration Dorie.

Dorie, it seems as if that is in the Realtors ethics clause, due diligence. Most folks give due diligence to their clients, and forget about giving 'due diligence' to their business. The goal would be to do both!

Hi Dorie, Good ideas to think about.  What do I want, and if anything what I am willing to give up in order to get there. How am I going to get there?  Knowing what the goal is, and having "laser vision" as I read tonight is the key.  This is something we should work on everyday!  Thanks for this post Dorie, it seems simple, but a lot easier said than done.

I understand what you're saying, but I also think it's vitally important to be able to distinguish between needs, wants, and goals.

Lots of people here got into trouble because they wanted a house with a plasma television in every room, including bathrooms, garage, laundry room, kitchen, etc.

Wants are not necessary to life. Needs are. Goals are necessary to make something out of life.

Best wishes!

Hi Gloria,

Having a plan is crucial and identifying the business you want is tied to it. Some don't know who they want to work with which leads to confusion in creating a business plan!

Hi Carol,

Exactly! It's hard to write that plan and establish the direction for advertising etc. if you haven't identified what you want, who you want to work with, more listings than buyers etc.

Hi Mary,

Well put! It is easier said then done! You are right we need to work on it every day.

Hi Russel,

You are right we do need to be able to distinguish between needs, wants and goals. Identifying what kind of a business we want to have (a listing agent, working with buyers, a combination of both, working with a certain age group, working with a community etc.) and then making a commitment to making it successful. Some agents are all over the board and need to narrow the field down and concentrate on that area. It's hard to be an expert on everything and then get discouraged when your spread to thin and positive results are few and far between.

Dorie...

I've gone through my life looking ahead at the bigger picture. So many people have no clue what they want. They think they know but when they get it they are still not fulfilled. They're searching in all the wrong places. I sometimes wonder if they just afraid to look inside themselves. I understand that. When I look inside myself I scare the crap out of myself sometimes :)

TLW,

You are one of the few that have it together and tell it like it is. Your right about looking inside yourself..it's not rocket science!

So right. Success means different things to different people. Good advice on 'what ever it is' be committed to it.

Hi John,

Success does mean different things to different people. Finding "what it is" helps you decide where to focus your commitment!
