When I was a kid, I used to spend a lot of time at my grandparents' house.  They lived nearby, and I later realized what a blessing this was for me, since I really got to know them.  When I was over there, I had a different set of friends from my own house.  They were a little rougher around the edges than the kids in my own neighborhood, frankly.

Rather than delving into stories about them (and believe me, there are stories), I wanted to talk a bit about one of our favorite activities when I was 10-12 years old: Exploring the Creek.

Believe me, it was even less sophisticated than it sounds.  In fact, we didn't even name it.  We just spent a good portion of the day walking along the creek as far as we dared to venture before turning around and heading home.  Sometimes, the creek was quite full, and we would dread returning home with mud up to our waists.  Other days, it was more dry and we would go to the pond part and skip rocks.  I am still a champion rock skipper, in case you were curious.  It's an acquired skill.  :)

Rarely did we encounter anything truly dangerous during our excursions, and these memories are almost all happy ones for me, except for the time my friend Marc Newman shot me with a BB gun in the leg for no apparent reason.

Where am I headed with this?

Well, my own social media journey started right here on ActiveRain in 2007.  Since then, I have developed an almost academic interest in this topic.  My friends here have led me to lots of other sites, each of which has been productive to varying degrees.  Some of them are certainly more "social" than "media", I suppose, but that's okay.  Some "gurus" will tell you to concentrate on finding and befriending others in your industry or your local area, which is sound advice, but I don't think there's any reason to limit yourself.  In my business, everyone has the ability to refer a buyer or seller to me, right?

If you are just finding your blogging legs, so to speak, I applaud you for making the jump into an unfamiliar landscape.  If you are a seasoned veteran, this post may not speak to you as much.

I would encourage you to "explore the creek" from time to time when it comes to social media.  There are a lot of different paths, and most of them will provide some measure of fun and learning.  You will find your own favorite spots as you dive in.  You can stick to the well-worn path, of course, but I assure you that a bit of courage will go a long way.

After all, you probably won't even end up covered in mud, unless you choose to do so.

Thanks for reading!

Jason...

I have explored the other sites and use them periodically, but ActiveRain is still my base of operations. It works well for me so I don't feel compelled to change right now.

Jason-

When I was a kid (just a few years ago, really) we called it "creek jumping". Creek jumping escapades are among my fondest memories of childhood.

In 10,20, or 30 years, looking back on my adventures in social media, meeting people like you, feeling good about being my self, I'm certain that the memories will rank among my best. Right up there with creek jumping.

Thanks for sharing this, Jason.

Richard - I wouldn't advocate changing your base of operations.  Even if you go exploring, you have to go back home!  :)

Ian - I don't honestly remember if we had a name for it, but that sounds really familiar.  I am older than you, so I guess I am entitled to forget, right?  Thanks for your thoughtful comment.

Jason, You comment on the BB gun - reminded me of my oldest brother shooting me in the leg as I rode my bike by - he was pretending I was one of those ducks in a carnival game and the actually hit me in my left shin.

As to the social media yes I agree. I am in San Diego and today attended a Social Media panel where they detailed many avenues of Social Media including ActiveRain and encouraged people to use the top 1 to  3 they felt most confortable participating in. They aslo made it clear that Social Media is a form of marketing - but soon it will not be called social media but instead it will just be marketing.

I have all I can do to keep up with this site.

Jason, I like your analogy.  Sticking only to real estate in the tech world can limit our options in many ways.

Good points Jason. I know some folks that do not use ActiveRain anymore. They felt the whole social media gig was just too time consuming and not beneficial to their business. I find just the opposite...

Jason -

I had two creeks (we called them "cricks" in those days down on the farm).

One was big: suitable for fishing, swimming, and taking down beaver dams.

One was tiny, good for flowers for Mom and heavy on shade for summer escaping.

Social media also have their differences it seems....some good for diving in...some just for wading.

I remember the creeks as I was growing up and have good memories --- but I think Jim said exactly what I agree with - Thanks for sharing!

Hi Jason:  Your post is probably going to evoke similar memories for many of us.  However, for me, it makes me recall my brother's going to a place they called "quicksand land".  It was a big mudpit near a cabin we had on Lake Burton.  I was never allowed to go because in that day, "I was a girl" !
Anyway, you make a great point about social media and using it to expand beyond just connecting with others in our business.  Enjoyed the story about your creek exploration.  I know my son had a similar experience growing up and came home many times with mud up to his ears!  I figured he was washable so what the heck.

Hi Jason,
We all have those wonderful, childhood memories of special places and adventures.  The internet has certainly broaden our horizons and opportunities.

Hi Jason,

I still enjoy exploring the creeks.. I grew up on a river and spent most of my tomboy days exploring the pastures and deep woods around that river.  That part of me always finds peace around bodies of water.  Just remember to take your shoes off when you wade the mud.

Exploring the social media sites is near as much fun to me as exploring the creeks and rivers but it is a great analogy.

I have not found other social media sites that I want to give as much time to as I do to Active Rain or has the "payback" that Active Rain does.

I used to love to jump gulleys and explore the woods! I picked many a tick off my head but it was worth it! And you are definitely speaking to me and I hear you loud & clear! Thanks Jason!

Awww Jason! *tears* We used to intertube down creeks for several miles.  Sad thing is, I google map imaged my block in Idaho Falls, Idaho where the creek abutted and it is no longer there.:(  I'm sure those kids are inside playing videogames instead of creek tubing, creek jumping and creating their own type of Sandlot adventures as we did.

As for social media, I just started blogging on AR this week and tapped my foot out ahead of me testing the depth and wading until the bottom dropped off and I was in neck deep.  Now its sink or swim.

Jason - I remember when I obtained my e-PRO certification in 2005 the encouragement I received to venture into RealTown. I never did get into it. ActiveRain worked much better for me as a platform. As you said in your post, everyone's got to find their own path.

Hi Jason, I remember playing on the 16 mile creek behind my friend's house when the ice started giving way from the edge.  It was pretty scary.  And yes social media can be a little scary or actually overwhelming.  My hesitation is often whether or not my post should be sent to the public or members only.  I always wonder what the public will think about me professionally.

Does anyone else wonder that?  Have you ever written about that?

Jason,  I remember my brother and I living in Columbus Georgia when we were younger and on our way home from school we played in what we called a swamp.  Today you couldn't pay me to do that, but I wish I had that much adventurousness to me now!

Jenny - The only times that I make stuff Members Only anymore is if the subject matter only pertains to AR, and would have no audience outside of this community.  Otherwise, I guess I let it all hang out, so to speak.  :)
