For those that weren't aware...  I had a wreck.  Luckily it wasn't a garage toy... it was my computer.  Hard drive crashed... data and programs lost.

I still have a valid license for MS Office Professional 2003, but they are such a pain in the butt... and there are a couple of generations since my version of Office was new.  So, I was faced with a few choices.

  • Hang out on the phone convincing Microsoft that I needed a new User Key...
  • Buy an upgrade of Office for a few hundred bucks...
  • Wait until the new version comes out.  There are rumors Office 2010 might be out of Beta before long...
  • Make a radical change...

Well, CHANGE is in the air, right?

I decided to try out OpenOffice.  In effect it is an Open Source office suite.  This isn't a bunch of college students  hacking together asecond rate copy...  This is sponsored by Sun Microsystems, Google and IBM.  And it's FREE.

Here is an idea of what it includes:

  • Writer - Word Processing (Word)
  • Calc - Spreadsheet (Excel)
  • Impress - Presentation (PowerPoint)
  • Draw - Sketching (Paint)
  • Base - Database (Access)

There are also charting and formula applications that live in Calc.  What it doesn't have is a direct stand alone application like MS Publisher.  However, there are options like Scribus which offer all of the features... albeit, without the integration of a specific suite.

But... the rest of the package IS designed as a suite and is supposed to be fully integrated.

And the advantage of an open source product is that there are a lot of folks tuning it to their purposes.  Some of them are quite brilliant and creating specific little modifications that can be very useful.  I've run across this with GIMP, which is an alternative to programs like Photoshop.

We'll see if the product makes the cut.  I've knocked out a few documents with it, and it has been very similar to MS Office.  It also can convert documents from MS Office (and other options) as well as convert TO other types of documents.  In that way it is a bit more flexible than many commercial options.

Ah, Lane. It's in the air. I went into the office early yesterday to finish a presentation for the Market Center. Practical Tips & Tricks to Harness the Power of Active Rain. Just as I was finishing up, my laptop died. Stone cold. First time I ever did technical training without a computer, LOL, however the show must go on!

Anyway, I have this little netbook that's new and unused. Need that puppy now. I think I'll go get open office this moment.

I know where you guys can get Office Enterprise 2007, nudge, nudge, wink, wink.  My computer crashed, actually drowned, recently and bought a new one.  I searched Ebay and got Office 2007 for $25.  Nudge nudge, wink wink.  It is a genuine copy by the way.

Hey Lane..Bummer Sorry to hear about your Crash, I back up using Drop Box, which allows me duplication on other computers and online.

Also look at Google, they have a Document program, gmail, spreadsheet, photos..

I upgraded to Office 2007 earlier this year, your old Documents if you can find them will also work in 2007, not so sure about 2010 Office.

Katerina Gasset went to Mac when hers Crashed...says she wish she did it a long time ago, the AR gods are all on Mac

Good Luck :O))

Lane -

It's amazing.  No matter what the industry.  You cannot sit still at the top.

Between Google, the Chinese and open source competition, can Microsoft stay on top of the heap for long?

I'm so sick of the Microsoft products with built-in obsolescence and the who gamut of issues and errors.  I'm always open to considering the options.

Lane - Have you ever tried paint.net. It is open source and I think it is as good as photoshop.

Lane, I did exactly the same thing recently when I could not find our copy the Office 2003 CD or User Key a few months ago after major computer CPR. Open Office was so similar and easy to use that I "gave" it to my teenagers, who seem to lose everything (now, where do they get that trait?). They use it for all their school projects. I eventually found my old CD, but now I tend to use Google for document writing and spreadsheets because it is so easy to gmail them, and add those incredible google goodies!
